Hello all. I'm fairly new to the fixed blade world. My current EDC set up consists of a Benchmade 940 and a Leatherman Surge on work days and I switch out the Surge for a Wave+ on my days off. I've recently been on a buying spree that began with a Fallkniven S1X. I love the look and feel of it. As I was researching that model I came across several others that sparked my interest. I tend to favor heavier blades and lean towards stainless. I currently have or will be receiving soon an Esee Izula stainless, an Izula II 1095, and a Junglass, a Benchmade Bushcrafter, a Ka-Bar fighting/utility knife 1095 with Kraton handle, a SOG Desert Dagger, a SOG Seal Pup, some kind of cheap/crappy Browning Black Label with spear point and cord wrapped handle. And obviously the S1X. I've had the SOGs and the Browning for quite a few years. There's a hole between the Izulas and the Benchmade that I'd kinda like to fill. Since I'm pretty enamored with the Fallkniven I was thinking about the F1X. The one reservation I have is the blade thicknes. Whatever I end up with will likely become my edc so it would need to be really versatile and a decent slicer. I am also considering the COS version of the regular F1. It is slightly thinner (.17 vs .20) and the blade shape would likely lend itself to more light/medium duty tasks. Would I notice a difference in the performance of a blade that is only .03 thinner? The price for the F1CoS is only about $6 less expensive than the F1X and the sheath that the X comes with is significantly better than the one that comes with the F1 CoS. If there won't be a noticeable difference between the two, I'll jump on the F1X. I'm also considering an Esee 3 which is available in s35vn, and 1095. I'm open to comments or other suggestions?
Thanks!
Mike

It's good to see you're so excited, and enthused....

What I think is missing, and More important is....
What's the knifes intended purpose, and how/where are you going to carry it?

I don't think enough people consider the sheaths. Are you wanting it concealed or not? Bulky. Comfortable? Sometimes comfort is sacrificed.
Accessable for defense?

Depending on what knife, I'm carrying, it's at 11, 12, or 5 o-clock. IWB

The F1 pro comes with the upgraded sheaths and a sharpening stone. Leather is also available. The F1 also is made in 3G steel too. I personally love the LamCoS! Its easy to sharpen and hold the edge pretty well. After use a few passes on the strop and back to laser sharp. Love my volcano!! Good luck with your search. The volcano is LamCoS and the juni is 3G. Having carried fixed blades as EDC for decades I too agree the sheath is as important as the knife, maybe more so.

Yes!!!
I've been saying This for years.....
Handles and Sheaths.

Too many people focus on blade shapes, and Fancy steels.

I think a lot of it depends on what you do too:

Listen to Horsewright Horsewright and Crag the Brewer Crag the Brewer , the way you carry a fixed blade is important and will dictate what type of knife you are able to carry as an EDC.

Unless you are willing to wear a full belt sheath with a dangler, you'll be limited in some ways regarding size, weight and shapes of fixed blades.

I like a 4-5" fixed at 3 o'clock in a kydex sheath carried straight up and sitting high, so that only 3-4" of the sheath extend below my belt. Excellent comfort when seated (for instance when driving a car with bolstered seats) and easy concealment if you need it.

My go-to alternative if I'm wearing clothing that may accumulate wear and tear from the kydex or handle, I'll usually go with front right pocket carry instead, with a slim kydex or homemade leather sheath. For knives with blade lengths under 4" pocket carry is pretty much my default.

Have fun finding out what works best for you :)
