I was just looking at a picture of Emerson's new CQC-14 LB fixed blade and noticed what looks like an opening hook you would normally find on a waved Emerson or Spydie folder. Anybody know why that hook is there on a fixed blade knife?? Just thought it seemed odd.

Cheers,
jon:)

Some companies put a hook like feature on the top of the blade to catch an adversaries' blade ... I have used them for bottle openers. If they can open a beer I think the idea is great!!!!

It is a blade catch like on the Scrapyard HookGuard or Busse PBF. Originally it was a folder with a blade catch that opened when it was pulled out of the pants that gave Ernest the idea for the wave. I just found that out for sure on the wikipedia article on Emerson(worth checking out) but I had my suspicions as soon as I saw my new Commander next to my very similar HookGuard.

Yeah on fixed blades it serves as sort of a guard...in a knife fight it would save your hand from beign sliced pretty good in the even that the knife does not have full guards...And like clearytga said, it could be used as a bottle opener...

in medieval swords / daggers, they were bladecatchers / guards. don't know if they worked at breaking another guys blade but they were really just guards. Since we're not into duelling these days, they are more style than function.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the info. It has been a while since my last swordfight, and unfortunately, Budweisers are twist off.:D I've learned a bit from this thread, but it doesn't look like I'll be having a need for one of these any time soon. Nice looking knife, though.

Thanks again,
Jon
