I am looking for a decent field dressing/quartering knife on a budget.

Here are a few I have been looking at.........

Kershaw Bear Hunter II fixed blade knife. Features AUS8A . 9 1/2" long.
Kershaw Antilope II fixed blade knife. Features AUS8A 7 3/4" long
Camillus Carbonitride Titanium AUS 8 8" long
Kershaw Whiplash 8CR14 9" long
CRKT Kuskokwin Kommer Signature Hunter 1.4116 7.62"

Cold Steel GI tanto 1055 12" long (I just want one!!)
CRKT SOTB AUS6 8" long

Opinions welcome. I'd like to stay under $50!!! :o

Ontario Rat 1

The AUS 8 on that knife has one of the better heat treats found on that steel in production folders. The blade grind and shape also lend itself well to the intended tasks you have described. Overall a great folder and very robust with a price good enough your budget would allow you two of them.

I want a Rat, but I was kind of looking for a fixed blade for that chore- nothing like getting blood and fat all up in a folder. Been there-done that.

The fixed blade part flew over my head.

Kershaw Diskin hunter, 14c28 blade steel (much better than AUS8) and imo a nice design.

You might also take a look at Mora knives and also the Cold steel budget line. The sheaths on these knives are not great, but they are all functional. The steel is generally soft, but it takes a spectacularly sharp fine edge. The Mora knives will generally have a much harder steel (and better IMHO) than the Cold Steel knives.

Here is bad photo (I took) of a mora 2000 and a scout(?)

I'm fond of the Canadian Belt knife as well

And then there's the roach belly and the Finn Bear

I think that Chris has made some excellent suggestions. You may also want to look at the Buck lineup, as they have a great selection of hunting/skinning knives.

After checking out some videos on the Kershaw Diskin and Field Knife Hunter I think that maybe that's the way to go. Kershaw makes a great product and I like the leather sheaths. I know that I want one of each. And probably the Mini Skinner too :D

Buck has some packlite knives that are inexpensive, as well as fixed blade Bucklite Max skinners.

I have a Mora scandi-grind with the red handle. I forgot I bought it. Tossed it in my pack 3-4 months ago!! I guess now I can "search" for something I don't have yet. The RAT 1 maybe!!

After futher review I bought a Rat-1 Desert/black. I picked it over the Utilac II. Since I have the Mora, my options were more.."open" and after reading all the wonderful praise (for the RAt-1) on this site I had too see what the fuss was all about. I almost bought the Junglee Venom. It has good steel, but looks cheap. CRKT Razzle has been on my short list for a while too.
