Hey everyone,

I've always used knives but I fear I have not really had any experience with some of the better quality knives available.

I know you guys and gals most likely get posts like this all the time but I'd appreciate it if you could give me some input. Right now I'm in the market for a quality folder and or a quality fixed blade knife. I've been looking at Benchmade, I've never tried any of their products and I'm curious to see how they perform.

Does anyone have any experience with the Niimravus Cub? It is kind of expensive for my penny pinching ass but I've been saving up for a new knife. :)

Any folder suggestions? What do you ladies and gentlemen use? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope everyone is having a nice day so far

give us an idea of what you would be using it for and you'll get more opinions than you'd believe :p

BM is a good company to start with since they make a fine product. There are many great knives to choose from their line up so you can't really go wrong.

Any particular uses your knife will be seeing? or just general utility? Answering these will help narrow it down a little.

Having said all that though I am partial to the AFCK myself. As an all round utility knife or for defensive purposes this one is a winner.

Hey,

Alright, let me narrow is down a bit. I'm looking for a knife for utility/defensive purposes. It would also be a plus if the sheath has a lot of different carrying options so I don't have to advertise that I'm carrying a knife. Boot carrying would be nice, Just some way to keep it out of sight. Thanks for the responses so far :)

Benchmade's Snody Activator is less 'mean' looking and has better steel.
Spyderco's Snody/Janich Ronin has a multi-position sheath, better steel, and costs about the same.
Fred Perrin's LaGriffe comes in a variety of configurations and prices, but many are affordable. Duane Weikem sells two versions with bare-bones being ones costing just a bit more than a Nimravus Cub.

If can find one, the discontinued 145HS Nimravus Cub (with M2 steel) is perfect for what you described.

For folders that are big enough for defense and small enough to conceal, you could look at Spyderco's Military or the new ATR. Or the Camillus Dominator, which has an assisted opening system (snaps open when you press the lever), a feature that I like but some don't.

For top end, the Sebenza is about as good as it gets.

I think most people feel that S30V is the best all-round steel, so that's where I'd start.

But you'd want nothing much bigger than 3 or 4 inches for utility. For defense, you'd want as big as you can carry. The Camillus Maxx 5.5 is a great knife for defense, but a little big to conceal.

I also like the Cold Steel Ti-Lite, which has a respectable, but lower quality steel (AUS 8) than S30V or D2. But it has a great design and snaps open easily when you pull it from your pocket. Its design is a fair compromise between defense and utility.

I think any pocket-clip folder is concealed enough.

The Benchmade 710 is an EXCELLENT folder...With it you get 154CM steel, G-10 scales with dual stainless liners, the Axis-lock, dual thumb-studs, and a reverseable pocket clip.

The Benchmade 805 is MY all-time favorite folder, and it might be a tad too big for you, but as a "defensive" folder, it's one of Benchmade's best.

There are also the Benchmade Griptilian/Mini-Griptilian models to take a look at, as they are an excellent value, and share the same Benchmade quality as the more expensive models.

The Benchmade Nimravus or the smaller Nimravus Cub are two excellent fixed-blades, and with them you get 154CM steel, a full tang, and G-10 scales.

As MY favorite fixed-blade, you might want to take a look at the Camillus CUDA CQB-1...That one is totally excellent.

I've found some 145HS Nimravus Cubs with M2 steel online. I'm a bit concerned about the black coating, any pros? cons?

I'm also liking the spyderco ronin/snody. Does anyone own this knife? Has anyone had a chance to use it? Does it perform well? It has a unique blade design and I was wondering if it holds up in practice.

How is the Nimravus Cub carry wise? Is it easy to conceal? Does anyone here edc it? Ditto for the spyderco ronin/snody.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and give me some feedback.

In terms of bang - for - the - buck, I'll agree with Dann that the Benchmade 710 is hard to beat. I like it better than the 805, actually, because the 710 feels more comfortable in my hands.

Well, you might want to check up on Jersey law (and that of nearby states, if you travel much) before you pick a knife.

Something like the Benchmade Activator looks considerably less like a "weapon" than, say, a Nimravus, and that could mean the difference between getting arrested and going on your merry way one day, especially if you look like you're trying to hide a knife in your boot. IMO, sticking a knife in your boot would make it look like you're "trying to hide a weapon", and not "handily storing a utility knife", but do what you want.

Maybe you can have a look at eBay. And to keep the price down you can
get one in 440 C. That's a less exotic steel, but it is still used by some
custom knifemakers ( I think Bud Nealy uses it)
