I've got more tactical folders than I can use and now I want a custom fixed blade to use for general camping chores and just all around fun.
what are my choices I know very little about fixed blades, but I know I want a durable knife.
Thanks for the info.
P.S. I'll need to see some photos.

For this price range, try looking at knives by Rob Somonich, Mike Snody or Trace Rinaldi. I have knives from all three makers that I am very happy with in the price range you are looking at.

Place to look for pictues of these knives are their own websites:

Rob Simonich: http://www.simonichknives.com/
Mike Snody: http://www.snodyknives.com/
Trace Rinaldi: http://www.pe.net/~thrblade/

All three are members of this forum and can be asked for ideas and advice.

Or places such as Les Robertson's or TAD's websites. It is also worth doing a search in the custom forum - lots of knives in this price range have pictures and comments in there.

Best of luck with your choice.

Regards,

Ed

I have plenty of available space with FREE parking for any tactical folder that is just MORE than you can handle!!!!!!!!!!wolf:p

You might want to try one of Bob Dozier's knives. You can get one for less than what you are considering now and still get superior performance. There are some threads on them in the Reviews and Testing forum.

Check out Independence Custom Cutlery

There are combat grade (saber grinds ) and tactical grinds (flat grinds) to choose from, 1/4" ATS-34 and thick kydex.

That is an example of their work.

You could get a Strider as well for the money you listed. Those you can treat gently or roughly. Busse blades as well.

Good luck!

You are a lucky fellow. there are so many excellent knives in this price range to choose from that narrowing it down to just one is almost impossible. You'll have to be a little more specific about your criteria to avoid getting everyone's favourite maker mentioned.
I can't complain about any of the suggestions so far. I just got my Trace Rinaldi TTKK in stellite and it is fantastic for general camp chores, [if you restrict the chopping to relatively light work because although mine feels like it can do anything, some say stellite and talonite can roll an edge under heavy chopping]
Any Rob Simonich custom is worth buying, IMHO.
Let me also suggest to you some superb Canadian makers.George Tichbourne, Thomas Haslinger, Greg Lightfoot [yes, he makes camp knives] and Wally Hayes, all of whom can be reached thru the CKG site and they have their own sites as well. George makes very tough knives in 440C [and a very limited number in stellite], Thomas makes very stylish knives, largely in ATS 34. Greg's Great White in BG 42 is a beauty and Wally Hayes is an amazing Master Smith and if you see something of his available in your price range, grab it.
Sooner or later someone will mention that some Busses are in your price range. They are great hard use knives, no doubt about it. But there's something about a custom...

Anything Strider or Busse would fit the bill. Some people side with one or the other, however they are both excellent blades.

email me if you are interested. I have some A2 on the way to make some camp knives out of with approx 7" blade, 5" handle. Price is way under your limit :)

Well below your budget (but I can always raise my price ;)). Got several ready for handles with 5", 6", and 7" blades.

I think you have a lot of choices here ;)
From my personal experience I would recommend a few.
Customs:
Trace Rinaldi:
<A HREF="http://www.zvis.com/knives/knimgtmpl.shtml?http://www.zvis.com/images/knives/custom/triwh1.jpg"><IMG SRC="http://www.zvis.com/images/knives/custom/triwh1i.jpg"></A>

Jerry Hossom:

Neil Blackwood:

All work on various steel, offer excellent service and top notch quality. I was really pleased to do business with them :)

Also you definitely have to check out Both, <A HREF="http://www.bussecombat.com/">Busse</A> and <A HREF="http://www.striderknives.com/">Strider</A>.
Besides main production lines they can work on your design as well, and imho those are execeptional knives.

R.W., that's one fine looking knife! What blade steels can that one be ground out of? CPM3V? D2 maybe? BG42? How much?

Thanks guys I really want a strider but right now you can't get one, which is ok because the boys and girls over there need them more than I do. I'm checking out all the other options you gave me. I forgot to mention in the first post that I kinda like the tanto point style.

That is one of my Model 10s in the photo.

As shown that one was $250. (it sold some time ago)

Standard specs are ATS-34 Rc60 HT by P. Bos
Hand rubbed satin finish. Tapered tang. Blade is 5", OAL 9 3/4".
3/16th" stock.

Base price $200 = Slab handles. Hidden bolt style rivets. Tooled leather sheath, or sheath by On-Scene Tactical.

Dovetailed bolsters and mosiac pins = +$25

Blade Tech Carbon Fiber Concealex sheath w/TekLok = +$25

Blade size = +$25 for each inch above 5". NOTE = no tapered tang on knives 6" and larger.

S90V upgrade = +$75

I will work in almost any steel that I can get in the size I need. Have only made them up in ATS and S90V at this point. Have looked into BG-42 but have been having some trouble finding it in the size I need. I ask for no deposit unless materials are out of my norm and are of a high cost. Then I ask for a deposit to cover only those extra materials.

Tanto point? Did you see my Combat Model 6? If you can break it I'll replace it. Standard Practice! :D Independence Custom Cutlery

And by the way---Thanks Crayola for the kind word!:)

No Problem Jim!

And for the record, I own no ICC knives, and am in no way affiliated with them in any way. To be honest, I couldn't even afford one right now either! But if I had $300 to $500 to spend on a knife that cuts and is tough as a pissed off Marine, ICC knives would definitely be on my list.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm goanna get a strider, even if I have to wait a while, I just love the style and especially the cord wrapped handle.
