I'm looking for a smallish (4-5 inches) fixed blade for hiking and camping.
I'd like to spend less than a hundred bucks. Just need something strong and simple. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Mora Mora Mora. Absolutely GREAT knives for less than $30 for most models. The new Bushcraft models are right about what you're looking for.

For all of the Becker fans, I know that the BK2 is in the blade length range, but IMO, it's not a "smallish" knife. :p

Steel should be durable and corrosion resistant. I'm rough on my gear, so durability is most important.

A Fallkniven F1. 4" laminated blade with V10 as the cutting edge, plenty tough enough for your needs.

A Buck 192 Vanguard is a great hiker/bushcraft knife. You can get it in S30V as an 'Alaskan Guide' version from Cabelas. Another excellent choice is the winewood handled Benchmade 201 Activator+, although it is only 3.63". The 510/515 Rant is longer at 4.48" and fitted with a rubber-like handle. The BM's are of D2 steel. I don't have a Rant.

After having used a Mora Classic, I started using a Mora 2000 this year. I took it with me during a four week camping trip this summer and for me it is an excellent camping knife.

Fallkniven F1, ESEE RC-4.

Bark River Bravo-1, Gunny or Fiddleback Forge (Bark River production) Recluse, but those will both set you back more than $100.

My light hiking knife is a Mora 510, in a custom kydex sheath. Weigh a whooping 4.8 oz, and it includes a G-clip and a firesteel (with kydex loop)!

Get a stainless steel version, and you have a great setup for a very small price. I think investing in a custom kydex makes sense; yes, it cost as much as the knife, but if you end up loosing your knife (or need a new one), buy the same model and you can reuse the sheath. My $0.02.

I know there are allot of people out there that hate Cold Steel (sometimes for good reason) but i think that you would find it difficult to beat the Cold Steel SRK at its correct price-point (maybe around 80$)

I have had mine for a few years now and have subjected it to some VERY hard use and it has always served me well.

Mora

Helle

Blind Horse Knives

Dan Koster

Tom Krein

Those are the ones I rotate through on my dayhikes & camping trips.
