My buddies birthday is Friday and he mentioned he wanted a fixed blade for camping/fishing/cottage tasks. He isn't a knife nut so he'd be happy with anything but I'd like to get him something that will wow him. 6"-9" blade with a good case that can attach to a belt or pant pocket. Budget is $100 maximum. I'm a folder guy and don't have one fixed blade and don't know much about them.

You've got a spare benjamin head over to the custom makers FS area in the exhange. Nothing says wow like a handmade or possibly hand forged knife blade.

Becker Bk7 is the first blade that comes to mind personally, that or the ESEE 6. Both are great choices.

The only problem with a larger knife is that they generally aren't very good at say... filleting a fish.

The other question to ask yourself is if you think he needs a Stainless or carbon steel knife. If he's going to be around water all of the time, and probably not take care of the blade at all then maybe Stainless is a good option.

Check out: Fallkniven f2 Fisherman for $97 or F1 for $116, or ESEE model 3 or 4 (though not great for fish)
or
For $100 you could get him a Mora for less than $30 and a LED Headlamp like a ZebraLight H51FW or Flashlight SC51. He'd be set to work around the campsite all night. :-)

You can get some real decent customs for $100 or less from many makers here, something in a nice stainless with a hand tooled leather sheath? That would wow the he'll out of me, BK7 or RC5 or something not so much. Not because they aren't great knives they're just not "WOW" knives.

Thanks guys, I'm going to search all of the above mentioned right now. He has a cutco fishermans solution which I got for him as a groomsmen gift in my wedding, engraved as well. I'd say a stainless would be a good idea though.

My vote goes to the Cold Steel Hunter Pendulton in VG-1 . I have the smaller version and have to say it out shines any other fixed blade I own ! You should check out CKC knives he makes some amazing outdoor knives if you want to go custom .....

Thanks guys! I'm liking the bk7 and the Ontario rd7. Where can I get one for the best price? Keep in mind I'm from Canada.

Though it costs only $45 to $60, depending on whether you get the rubber or leather handle version, the KaBar Mark 1 Navy knife is what I'd want in a camping/fishing blade. The blade is only about 5.25" long, but the knife is very strong with a wide, full length tang, steel pommel and good sheaths- leather for the leather washer model and plastic for the Kraton model.
