is there such a thing as a good inexpensive knife for hunting purposes? I mean something that will hold a good edge, and be less than lets say...75 bucks? Is there "sleeper" so to speak? Something with a 4inch blade maximum?

By "hunting knife" I presume you mean a knife for skinning and field-dressing game. Depending on what you will be hunting, the blade length will vary. But one thing remains the same regardless: good edge-holding means good quality steel, and good quality steel costs more money. But I guess there are exceptions, and the first that comes to mind is a Mora Companion - they come in carbon or stainless, and they're worth every penny:

Any of the Mora ,marrttii are great . Also look at the queen light hunters , they are well made with stag handles .They are made in D2 steel , so once sharp they hold a edge well . Enjoy your search and let's know what you pick :-)

Buck woodsman, pathfinder, vanguard & alpha hunter fixed blades all are available at or under $75. The steel is a little softer, but I see that as a good thing in the field, meaning for extended trips or dealing with large game or multiple
animals it's rather easy to touch up between tasks. Cleaned a lot of deer with mine and sharpen it once a year when the season rolls around and I've never had an issue. What type of hunting are you doing? Different types (waterfowl, small game, large game, skinning v. Boning) will require a different knife or may garner better suggestions.
It's really all about taste, find a maker or a design you like and roll with it.
My hunting setup consists of a buck 112 folder on my belt for general use and dirty tasks. A pathfinder fixed blade as my gutting and boning knife. An estwing hatchet in my backpack for quartering and splitting the pelvis. YMMV

Buy a Schrade USA Sharpfinger. You can find good used ones for a good price. The best design ever for skinning in my opinion.

AG Russell Deer Hunter or Bird&Trout. Available in a range of reasonable prices and very good steels.

Queen makes a decent inexpensive fixed blade in D2 steel for hunting. Not bad as long as you are willing to sharpen it.

I do like the Spyderco Moran a lot for a hunting knife. I think it runs $75-$100, not sure. Shop around.

Becker BK-11 or BK-14 are on the small side, but more than adequate. 1095 steel is quality, but the 14 comes in D2 for better edge retention as well (called BK-24). I thnk they can be bought brand new for around $30-$40 (BK-24 would be higher, but don't know how much)

(FK2) Farmers Knife 5 "
L6 steel, differentially heat treated.
For up to pig-sized game. Some blade sharpening & handle sanding required.

I was looking at my Kabar Becker BK-24 (D-2 steel) [~$50]. It would make a very adequate knife for most hunting situations. Put some handles on it however. That along with a folding saw for trimming brush or small trees, you got the bases covered.

I like the Spyderco Moran better, but the BK-24 would work well if it's sharp.

Lots of good, inexpensive options have already been suggested. Basically anything "sharp" will get the job done.

When I bought my hunting knife, I wanted something a little "sexier" that was still a "working knife" though... I settled on a Bob Dozier Buffalo River Hunter. Almost all of his knives are designed for hunting and have a reputation for amazing edge holding. AG Russell usually has a number of them in stock. They run about $200+/- (way more than your requested $75 budget) but they are well worth it and come with excellent kydex sheaths. Unless you're hunting spring Turkey, next hunting season is a long ways off- I'd save a few more months and "buy once, cry once", LOL!

Hard to beat the Doziers. I have three lying on my desk in front of me along with the BK-24 and Spyderco Moran.

I'll second the Knives of Alaska recommendation. The alpha wolf also comes in s30v for around $75. I bought one for my son for Christmas but he hasn't had a chance to give it a workout on a deer yet. I have a koa jaeger in ats34 for boning and really like it. I love my moras, they work but they are not my favorite blade design for processing deer. The sharpfinger works well. The cheap cold steel Pendleton light hunter also works well. My favorite hunting knife is my Ingram #7, but that's well above what you are looking for.

No it is not. What you want is a Schrade 152, USA made. They are on there fairly regularly and are a great value.
