I am looking for a fixed blade similar to a Becker bk2 or Esee 5 in that it uses 1/4 thick carbon steel in a saber drop point design with a straight flat edge. However I am looking for a longer blade. Ideas? A bk2/esee5 with a 6 to 8 inch blade???? Thanks.

Bark River will no doubt have something like that. Look at the Bravo series. The Bravo 2 might do.

The Blackjack 1-7 or 14 come to mind. I like their traditional styling. Randall knives were in fact the first really good fixed blades that caught my eye years ago and I have ever since liked that styling with the choil and so forth that allow for choking up on the blade if needed more easily. The ramps allow that also.

There are certainly a fair number of Bark River knives that would fill the need if you are comfortable with the price.

Why do you want a 1/4" bar steel knife? The BK-7 perhaps, but I believe it is 0.188" bar stock. Still plenty strong.

I really like the bravo 1. I will take a good look at the bravo 2 but I wish the blade was wider. I feel for a longer blade with such a thick stock, the width of the blade should be wider to decrease the bevel.

The blackjack isnt right for me because it is a clip point, and a thinner stock. I also don't like circular handles to prevent twisting.

I am looking for a chopper that is thicker for forward weight a little longer than the bk2.

JK Knives GBH. Just ask him to make you one with a longer blade and 1/4" stock.
Edit: with 1/4" stock, he can bring the grind higher if you would like.
GBH (Get Back Home).

Specs:
9 3/4" overall
5" blade
3/16" thick O1 steel
Rounded spine
Thumb ramp
Saber grind

The Bravos are .217 IIRC. But I agree that the Bravo 2 (or 1.5) might work just fine.

The SYKC Trash 1 also fits the bill (6.5in long .25in thick 1095 blade).

Good luck finding something that you like :).

EDIT: Personally, if you want a chopper, you want something longer. Chopping with short knives quite frankly is frustrating. The lower limit in blade length for me is ~8-9in, with an OAL of ~14-16in, otherwise its just too much effort to chop.

My price limmit is Becker / Esee range. Cheaper if I need to get a good sheath. Can pay a little more if comes w/ quality sheath. 150 ish and below. I am thinking about custom since I know the design I want. I didn't know about the trash 1 I am looking into it. Thx for all the input. Yes I know the longer blades are better for chopping. My bk9 is great for that but its a lot to carry. The bk2 is the best smaller chopper I have used so I thought 2 more inches would make it even better.

Yup I really like that Trash-1 design. Kind of just what I was looking for. The only thing I don't like is the handle. I did mention handle material because I am good with micarta, wood, g10, etc. but that rubber look just isn't doing it for me from a cosmetic stand point. But good call tho. Just the knife design I am looking for. I wander if I could order one w/ a different handle material?????

Got it.

As an FYI, the Trash 1 is going to be outside your budget then. $140 for the blade, and it comes with no sheath at all. Also, I don't think they'll do a custom version without the res-c handle (which most would probably argue is a positive... I have no idea, I've never handled one. I'd be worried it gives too much grip/blisters though). The bark river will also be over your price range, although at least they will come with a sheath.

Custom seems like the best option, although that will likely be close to your budget as well.

And strangely, Schrade has some newer models that might fit the bill. They're not my cup of tea, but you might find that you like them. Look at the ... schf 37 first?

The Gravelle FK7 might fit your specifications, and it comes with a kydex sheath, but it still is quite a bit for a knife because it's made with 3v. I have and FK5 and it's a fantastic blade, never afraid to beat on it and it takes it like a champ.

Ontario sp series, I remember having one that was a great chopper, and the sheaths are decent for the price.

Thanks guys. Those schrade knives are the design I am looking and its hard to argue wit the price. I am a little concerned about china 1095 and wander about the heat treatment. I am definitely looking hard at the bravo 2 and the trash-1. More expensive yes and I would have to think hard about it.

I am familiar with the ontario spec plus line. Their 1/4 inch knives are a little longer, more like 9 inch blades. The bushcraft woodsman has my eye when it is released but again is a longer knife.

Thx for the input.

The Bark River Grasso Bolo 1 has the same blade length and thickness as the Bravo 2 but has the weight forward chopper type blade. It also falls into your budget too at $150.
