I'm interested in purchasing the ka bar usmc knife for my car for SD. CCW is not an option.
What are the laws regarding a fixed blade in car in california?
Any better fixed blade for SD?
Can it be concealed?
What are the best places to put it?
Is the kydex sheath safer than the leather in case of an accident?

*I already carry fox OC spray and a folder. Thanks.

I doubt you can legally carry an empty toilet paper roll for self defense in the People's Republik of Kalivornia! I have one suggestion for your consideration, though. Learn to use a stick, or maybe a pair of sticks. Look up Duluth Trading Company on the web and order one of their nice, short, hardwood clubs that say "Tire Thumper" in big letters on it. You know, like truckers use for a quick, rough tire pressure check. The are about 16 to 18 inches long with a lanyard and a grooved place to grip it, and they don't cost much at all. Take a look.

Last time I checked there was no problem keeping a fixed blade in your car in CA. You should ask this question in the "Knife Laws" forum though just to make sure.

in the car is fine. neither 12020 pc or 653(k)pc prohibit carry of fixed blade knives in your car.

the only time i would see a problem is if you are on a school campus, college and university included. 626.10 pc.

so having it in the car while in a campus parking lot is considered on campus?

yes, if the parking lot is owned by the school in question. the section does not exempt vehicle carry or transportation except for lawful purpose, ie course of employment, food prep, etc.

but consider it would have to be found during a vehicle search or in plain view for an officer to know it is there.

im not suggesting you do anything illegal knowingly, but consider what circumstances would lead to its being found.

The "tire Thumpers" might run afoul of CA PC 12020 "billy" which I believe prohibits owning anything sticklike that you could hit someone with. However "The Club" (designed to prevent auto theft) within reach shouldn't be a problem, and should be legal.

Morimotom: PC 12020 a4 prohibits anyone from carrying a fixed blade "concealed upon his or her person," would that not include under the front seat of your car (i.e., concealed, but within reach)?

generally, on his or her person, does not include in a vehicle. i find nothing specifically mentioning vehicle carry in the 12020 sections.

i dont think the section applies.

653k specifically mentions switchblade carry in a vehicle though.

Don`t put it under the seat within your reach. It makes it look like you are using it as a weapon. In Kalifornia it makes law inforcement wonder what you are up to.

I just have to roll my eyes when people harp on California knife laws.

California knife laws are very reasonable. Not the best but not the worst either.
