I'm looking for a fixed blade knife with a 4 and a quarter inch blade or less. Be great if it was under a hundred bucks. Nothing with a kydex sheath. Please tell me your recamendations and maybe some brands I should look into. Thanks much.
I Ka-bar Becker BK16 fits the bill! I love mine! Also, Conder knife and tool makes some in that size range at a better price, but the ones I've handled have had awful Fit and finish and horrible grind lines.
I have heard that too.I bought the bk17 it's a really great knife and I absolutely love kabar and the whole bk lineup. But I would like to get another fixed blade because I have fallen in love with them and that's the only one that I have.
Give the Kabar Becker BK-24 a try. It has excellent steel (D2). You can get a custom leather sheath for it. The factory plastic is not very good in my opinion.
A lot of folks really like the ESEE 3. They have a new woods lore knife or two that are being introduced this year that might appeal to you.
Mora Companion mg, Mora Companion heavy duty mg, Mora bushcraft black. The carbon steel versions. Can probably get all three for $100. I just recently got a companion mg, $20, absolutely love it.
The tweener Beckers are SOLID and have great sheaths but are shorter than 4 and a quarter. For that Id actually say SOG Seal Pup...no Im not kidding. It was my first SOG and it blew me away. Cordura sheath, Aus-8 blade that comes exxxxtremely sharp and only cost me 50 bucks. I got an older version made somewhere else than where they are made now though IDK if that makes a dif or not but the SOG fits your size requirement almost exactly.
As suggested already, I "recommend" (sp) a Mora Companion - carries great on the belt, around the neck, or in a jacket pocket. And they come with either SS or carbon blades:
