I want some suggestions for a fixed-blade knife with a total blade length of under 4 inches. (Legal thing. :() I want something that is reasonably priced, has a high quality steel, and preferably comes with a kydex sheath. This will be an EDC knife, with self-defense as the primary (potential ;)) use. I know this kind of thing has been asked before, but I just wanted some answers that fit my specific situation.
Thanks in advance.

I have been looking at the Fallkniven F1 and the RAT-3. Is the Fallkniven F1's blade under 4 inches? It's labled as 3 3/4" or so, but i need to know the full length of the blade. (Just in case some LEO decides to measure it!)

I would go with the RAT-3. It's great, compact and easy to conceal. I carry it for utility, but it should work as a SD blade.

+1 on the RAT-3. It has a great sheath with both a boot clip and a tek-loc. Plus, the D-2 steel makes for a very sharp and durable edge.

For self-defense and ease of carry, it's hard to beat Spyderco's Ronin. It is incredibly sharp and has a very high piercing and slashing ability. If you have huge hands it may be too small for you though.

Consider contacting Chase Axinn.... http://chaxknives.com/
I like some of his smaller knives quite a bit - also consider a custom kydex sheath...

I do like the Fallkniven F1. The H1 (I think) is pretty sweet-looking too.

How about a Chris Reeve Aviator? You can also get a pretty cool custom skull crusher for it on ebay.

I am in the market for the same thing, but ease of carry is a must with a fixed blade for me. I am thinking of a schrade sharpfinger, if I can check out the sheath.

I had a swept point spyderco moran, and that was one of the most comfortable knives I've ever held. the handle is zytel with kraton inserts and offers a very postive grip. Only problem I had with it was the tek-lok sheath. I hate them. I prefer kydex with a boot clip for IWB carry. And the kydex on mine (got it in 2003) scratched the hell out of the blade. It was razor sharp vg-10 out of the box.

Rat-3 comes with kydex sheath with interchangable boot clip and tech lock
Fallkniven F1-excellent all around knife especially when paired with a good kydex sheath
Fallkniven H1-even better but you gotta be careful as there isn't even a hint of a guard
Entrek badger-great little knife, very people friendly in appearance
Ka-Bar TDI-three versions of the knife, very useful and easy to carry, very inexpensive
Queen Premium hunter-D2 blade well made kinda of crappy sheath but kydex can be had aftermarket $39.00 at www.cumberlandknifeworks.com excellent value in a people friendly blade

I have and enjoy all of the above. A new one, that I don't have..yet, that just came out that might fit your bill is the new Blackhawk Blades Crucible knife. Good steel designed by a CQB Guru...only thing is....if you actually stuck some dumbass with it the prosecuter would have a field day with the "this knife was designed specifically to kill...just look at who designed it....if he was carrying this knife, he must have been looking to kill someone because that is all this knife is good for" but, it looks like a great knife.

My best advice: www.dozierknives.com You should be able to find what you need there. Bob D. makes a superb horizontal kydex sheath also.

What Mongo said. I've carried a K-4 for over 4 years now and it is an awsome knife. I have the widerness sheath but I hope to send it back for a new horizontal sheath next month.
Good luck...

I recently picked up a Cold Steel Spike - Talon model - for about $30 at a local shop. It's awesome, and I'm having some guy make me a Kydex sheath with a techlock of some sort to mount it on my belt behind me.

The steel is beyond me, but I've used it quite a bit and it's stayed sharp I imagine because of the blade shape and grind. It's like a triangle and it just keeps cutting. Plus for self defense, it's small, thin, light, and pointy, yet strong because it's very thick at the spine.

My two cents,
Ryan

P.S. Remember, it's only $30 too... !!!

I would also have to vouch for the Rat-3. Just got mine about a month ago and it's just an all around functional knife. Nice compact size with plenty of blade to cut with.

I've also had work done by Chase Axinn and i can honestly say it was a pleasure to deal with him...not to mention his workmanship, which is second to none. :D

Many of the descriptions on his website are outdated in the sense that many of the steels have been upgraded. What is listed as say...440c now comes standard with something like 154cm. But also keep in mind, all his knives are fully customizable meaning you can specify what type of steel you want. Hope this helps!

I would also look at Dozier for small fixed blades. I've got both the
K-1 General Utility

and the K-31 Arkansas Traveler

The pictures aren't to scale, the K-1 is the bigger knife and the name is very appropriate. The K-31 is a nice little knife that carries so easily you can forget it's sitting right next to your belt buckle (horizontal carry).

Dozier knives feel great in your hand, lots to choose from.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Dozier knives look great and so do Krein, but they are a little more than I can afford. I can get a RAT-3 for around $80, and that is about as much as I can spend right now.
The Ka-Bar TDI knives are interesting, but not exactly what I am looking for.
The BlackHawk Crucible is also a little steep in price.
I am still looking though...
