Am looking for a fixed blade knife no more than 5" in length, not a tactical type blade but a plain blade for med/heavy use.

Have browsed and browsed till my head hurts and have found a couple which i like.

First is the Busse Basic 5 ( Just what is that hole for on the blade BTW )

Second is the Fallkniven S1 Forest knife

Any thoughts on my two choices and any other recommendations welcomed.

Buccaneer,
Have you seen these beauties from Marble's?

Just remember, that is the factory site that I linked to and the prices listed are factory MSRP. You can get many of these knives from several of the BFC sponsors for a lot less than list.

Both very good choices. VG-10 should be in the neighborhood of ATS-34 in terms of overall performance. Not quite up to BG-42.

INFI is very good stuff, both tough and holds an edge well, but is carbon steel, so edge care required, good news is blade is coated.

See Dozier's stuff for some other dandy blades at reasonable prices:

Pro Guides Knife (KS-3, 4.75")
Elk Hunter (KS-4 small is 4-7/8")

D2 is great edge holder, but prone to very light rust, so also requires a bit of care.

Bob will lightly customize for an extra $20 also, drop point on Pro Guide, probably could get him to leave off that top "guard" on the Elk Hunter...both would be improvements to both knives in my opinion. And Bob's Kydex sheaths are very good.

For a bit more money ($345), see the RJ Martin Quest at 5" in 440V:
http://www.robertsoncustomcutlery.com/martintf.htm

You could call it "tactical", but they are so utilitarian that to paint it with "tactical" might miss the great design elements that RJ put into these.

I own a Trek, and have handled the Quest & Oddessy at a show... super duper stuff. Great handles. Great heat treat by RJ, and RJ also knows how to get a super edge on knives. I have an Oddessy on order... will order a Quest also.

If "heavy use" means you may subject the blade to impact forces (chopping), get the Busse.

I would get the Fallkniven S1. It is totally non-threatening in appearance with its gently lines and nice silver color. In an area where the authorities look upon knives with suspicion, this knife might save you some grief if the local authorities see from a distance. At its pricepoint, it is hard to beat.

It will also perform very well. It has a good blade profile and good edge geometery. VG-10 blade steel is a good choice for a "factory" knife and, since it is stainless, will be more foregiving when stored wet - after all it does rain in your part of the woods frequenty doesn't it?

What price range are shopping in? Are you looking to buy in the U.S. to avoid local taxes and jacked up prices?

Stay Sharp,
Sid

I'm with Raptor. The Marbles knives are great. I just lightly caressed my Fieldcraft a few times with a white hard Arkansas a while ago...they'll take an unbelievable edge and hold it very well.

All great suggestions (I love my Marbles blades). For a user/abuser you might consider the Camillus pilot survival knife.

I really like the Busse 5, personally. Great durability and strength, and easy care and touching up the blade, even in the field.

I have a Fallkniven F1 and it's also a great knife, but the Busse just goes longer without needing care to the edge.

I see someone also mentioned the Campanion...also a great one, and for the price is really tough to beat.

Medium to heavy use? Sounds like a Busse or a Becker to me!

Medium to heavy use, non-tactical in appearance, sounds like the Basic #5 to me as well. I have nothing against the Becker but find the Busse basic handle much more comfortable and designed for more thasn one position.

The talon hole allows lashing for different applications and also, cleverly, lines up with a matching hole in the sheath so that you can put a wire tire or equivalent though BOTH the knife and the sheath as a safety lock around children or while travelling.

I also like the Chris Reeve One Piece Range Knives. Depending on the blade shape you are looking for, they make several really nice examples with a 5.5" blade for just a tad over $200. They have hollow handles, quality sheaths and are very sharp.

Thanks for all the replys, and to answer questions, my price limit was around the $150 mark so that put the RJ Martin Quest and Chris Reeve blades out of my reach.

The Dozierknives site I had real trouble with and could only get to see half of the range so gave up on them, this also applied to the Marbles site.

As i can't actually see the knifes in the flesh so to speak, I copied images into paintshop pro resized them and printed them out to get some idea how they actually look full size.

The Becker is an awesome beast for a 5.25" knife, or is that a 4.5" blade, the details on the Camillus web site states both dimensions but I reckon its the former.
If I need to fell some trees in the future this knife will be high on my list.

This has left me with my two original choices, the Busse 5 and the Fallkniven S1.
Both are very similar in size to the original knife I am replacing, an old 5" bowie with a blade about 4mm thk. Why dont I get another bowie I hear you cry, dont know, perhaps I just feel like a change.

So which one am I going for, well I've decided on the Fallkniven model as its a similar thickness, 5mm, as any chopping I will be doing was easily handled by my old knife. Also its cheaper.

If it dont work out to my liking then i will give the Busse a try.

So there you are, and thanks again for you input.

Regards Buccaneer.

Well I just typed out a reply post thanking everyone and explaining which knife I am going for, Submitted the Reply, got taken to a new page which said Thankyou for your reply, and where is it?, gone dissapeared, and I'm not typing all that lot out again.

Which knife?, will go for the Fallkniven.

Thanks again Buccaneer

And as if by magic my original post has now appeared.
