Hi just wonder what the best fixed blade knife is that is around 100 dollars, about 6-7 inches, and concilable. I am looking to use this knife for carry and hunting. Thanks

Overall length I'm looking for a knife that can be carried (edc), so a smaller size would be preferred. I am just getting into the knife world not quiet sure what to look for.

Ok, here's some knives to consider:

ESEE Izula
ESEE Izula II
ESEE-3
Ontario RAT-3
Fallkniven F1
Snody's "Black Diamond Boss"
Buck Vanguard S30V (Cabela's Exclusive)
Kabar Eskabar
AG Russell Deer Hunter (VG10 or D2)
Bark River - Pocket Bravo
Bark River - Bravo Necker 2
Scrapyard Knives 311
Spyderco Mule Team (Check their website for the various types of steels offered)
Mora Clipper
Blackjack Knives: Necker
Buck Kaala
Spyderco Moran

That list should get you started. Some of these are a little big bigger than you want, some smaller. Some of these are a little over $100 in price, and some are far cheaper.

But at least you now have some knives to look for.... ;)

Like the look of the rat 3. Is 1095 Carbon Steel any good how does this blade steel compare to others. Also the hardness is 55-57 HRC what does that mean? Thanks

Izula, Eskabar, or BK14
Rat 3 and ESEE 3 are nice, but closer to 8" OAL.
1095 is great carbon steel - easy to sharpen, tough, holds a pretty good edge.
Ontario should do it well; Becker does it great; ESEE may be slightly better than that.
55-57HRC is hardness on the Rockwell "C" scale - for a given steel, it tends to speak to edge retention, and a few other things. 55-57 is pretty standard for 1095, and for all-around knives in non-super-steel in general.
Good luck with your choice.

The Fallkniven WM1 is about as heavy as you want to go if you consider neck carry. Also can be carried on the belt. You can still find them for just under $100. For around $20, the Buck Paclite looks good.

I always thought that Cold Steel SRK would be a cool companion knife, here, I'll even throw in a pic. Then just get someone to make you a kydex sheath for your intended carry purpose. Good luck brother, I'm still looking for knives I can't find. (oops , I didn't see the smaller size restriction either)

The ESEE 3 hits your price range and length. I have an ESEE 4 and love it.

1095 steel is a very good steel that's been used for decades. In a nutshell, there are two categories of steel: carbon and stainless. Carbon steel is just iron and carbon- for example, 1095 is 0.95% carbon. Stainless steel has chromium added to it to increase resistance to rust.

Hardness refers to how hard the blade is. Generally, the harder the steel, the better it keeps its edge since it resists deformation better. However, if you get too hard, it may get brittle and is prone to chip or fracture. Types of steel are all tradeoffs.

1095, especially ESEE's, is great because it has a very good heat treatment process. It holds its edge very well, but it doesn't chip or fracture easily. The main problem with carbon steel is that it rusts; however, ESEE has a phenomenal coating on their blades. I used to plate medical instruments, and I can tell you from experience that their coating is extremely durable, and it protects the blade from rust.

ESEE also has a great warranty and they're made in the US (if you can't tell, I really like ESEE!).

for 6-7" OAL, 2nd Snody Boss. Looks like he made a few more, so get them while they last, it's a great deal for a handcrafted knife. Great all-purpose blade shape and design.

You could also look at a Cold Steel Pendleton Mini Hunter, Benchmade Bone Collector Skinner or Lone Wolf Skinner, Boker Arbolito stag skinner, Boker Plus Jermer, Dozier, Krein, Nippon Necker, Buck 113, Omnihunter, Ergohunter, CSAR-T, bunch of Cold Steel Minitacs, Muela IBEX, BK11, BK13, BK14, KABAR 9900, Kershaw skinners, ESEE CAN or IZULA, just to name a few.

Of the above knives my personal favorite would have to be the Swamp Rat Swamp Warden. While handle with scales is great, especially for extended use I've grown to become quite fond of the more simplistic para-cord wrapped handles and found them to be more than serviceable. Also Swamp rat's SR101 AKA 52100 has become my all time favorite genral use blade steel. It seems to IMO have a great degree of toughness paralled by great edge retention however it lacks sufficent corrosion resistance. Also the thinner blade profile is appropriate for a wide array of outdoor task. Also The Spyderco Bill Moran featherweight drop point is an excellent knife featuring first rate VG-10 stainless steel paired up with a very nice Kydex sheath featuring a very nice Tec clip type thing.
