Hi everyone - - I've been looking for a general purpose knife to use while hiking, camping, fishing, & hunting. After doing a lot of research on what's out there, I decided to go with the Mountaineer II - my first Chris Reeve knife. I can't wait till it gets here ! :) The leather sheath that comes with the knife looks quite nice - - what has been your experience with the sheath in terms of durability and moisture resistance ?
Does it retain water & affect the knife itself ? - - I do outdoor activities mainly throughout the western U.S. and also up in Alaska. (I live in the Pacific NW). So, I'm often in wet conditions. - - - I'll likely get a kydex sheath for it, but wondered how this leather one will hold up. Thanks for your comments in advance. Best regards, - -

The leather sheaths that come with the CRK fixed blades are soaked in resin and treated to the extent that they rival kydex for water proofness. I don't have any first hand experience but they are supposed to hold up well in wet situations.

Scott Dog - thanks for your comment. - - I'm wondering why guys are going with kydex custom sheaths for their CRK knives ? Some knifemakers package a pretty terrible sheath with their knives - something you throw away right away, - but the ones that come with the CRKs look nice from the pics. (I'll see for myself in a couple days when my Mountaineer II arrives.) Maybe its the weight savings on the kydex ? Thanks again to you and anyone else you might provide input on this. I was going to order a kydex sheath right after ordering the knife, but wanted to wait to see what others thought on this. - - Best regards, - -

the leather is very tough and quite water resistant. i have had a few, they also maintaing their original look after quite a bit of use.

My Shadow III has been through Fl. t-storms on a motorcycle more times than I can count, along with a 250 mile ride in a down pour. The leather sheath is holding up great and my knife stays dry too.

Hmmmm - guys. Glad I checked with some of you here first. Maybe I'll hold up a little on ordering the kydex. Thank you, - -

I have the Mountaineer II since 1996 I think.Leather has survived water snow mud and scratches. I would never consider a kydex.

Just curious - does the leather ever loosen up and create a looser fit on the knife? I hope not.

This is very encouraging - - I like to fish and am often in chest waders when I do this, sometimes I'm on the water in a float tube. I should be able to improvise and rig up the knife sheath so that I can carry it on my chest, under the waders, - for easy access. - - Of course, its not like diving - - but there's the possibility of getting a little fresh water on the knife/sheath. - -

I have just received the black leather sheath for the Green Beret 5.5", which I ordered on Friday (late in the afternoon). Heather sent me a reply stating it would be sent on Monday. I received it on Wednesday. It is easily one of the finest leather sheaths I have ever owned. The quality is in keeping with all their other products, which is to say, absolutely top notch. For those thinking about obtaining one of these sheaths, I say wait no longer!!! It will easily exceed your expectations! Two dollars freight (and it actually cost them more) and it arrived in SoCal two days later. Truly a pleasant surprise! Chris Reeve has one exceptional company!!! Thank you Chris and all those who work with/for you.

Gfeller knows his stuff. You will not have an issue with it getting loose in the grip. I have both the Shaddow III, Mountaineer I, and a custom Shaddow III with a single cross guard (1 of 20, I'm quite proud of having it too). The guy sitting in front of me has an Aviator (lucky guy got it from me for a present...) and a good friend has a Shaddow III... (That lucky guy got it from me as well for letting me use his truck once) That Shaddow III is sure popular in Boise...
Never have I known one to 'Pop' out. They stay put. I am wondering if Gfeller will make me a sheath that was just tanned leather, and not black...
HMMMMmmmm... I'm going down there on Monday! I'll let you know.

I'm currious if anyone has asked Gfeller to make a sheath for any one peice without using the dyed black leather and just going with a nice tanned look (like the Inyoni). I'd love to have one for my Mountaineer I & Shaddow III.

Thanks!

I would have to agree, I like the look and feel of leather. Tan brown leather looks the best in my opinion. I have never been fond of black leather as it looks dressed down when compared to the natural leather look that gives it that outdoors western look.

Well I got my Mountaineer II and the black leather sheath it came with is terrific. Outstanding quality. - - I'm not gonna really need a kydex one, unless I just want to add a little carry versatility with a Tek Lok type set up that allows horizontal, verticle, or cross draw carry. Regards, - -

does anyone know who made this sheath? This western bowie w49 is stamped on the guard, for date purposes
