I am looking to replace my old beat up spec plus combat. I would consider the role of the knife to be general out door utility. The bm presidio caught my eye, but I have also considered the bm csk, as well as the rat-7. These are about the price range I'm looking at. -Truth be told, I could probablly live with another ontario combat, but a little up-grading never hurts, right? Suggestions/opinnions please.

The RAT 5 is a heckuva do it all knife. Mine takes everything I throw at it and just smiles.

RAT 7..... Very good value for money. If you want something a bit heavier check out the Ranger RD 6 and 7...

That kabar is a knife I had looked at too. Same classic blade shape but with slimmer handles. -Looks good.
Those ranger knives look pretty tough too. Similar to a busse.

For the $ becker looks like a steal, but they don't appeal to me for some reason. Perhaps the handle?? -Those fermans look very nice, but I'm tryin to keep it a little cheaper. Unfortunatly...
Does anyone know what the "fire bow bearing on one side of the handle" is? (on the ferman shadow scout)

It's what you hold when you use the scooped-out hollow on the knife handle to push down on a stick with. You then wrap the string on your little bow to saw a fire into life with.

Bark river has some nice knifes. Slither is a good one. Tons of slashing and slicing power. A2 steel and convex edge are great together.
If you are doing heavy duty cutting, prying and chopping, look at Swamp rat's new line to be released at the Blade. They are not expensive, but hard to get. The steel is wonderful.

Try the Lakota Hawk, ... AUS8 and takes a great edge and holds it for whatever you want to toss at it .... another best buy....:D

I HAVE a Bark River Slither, and it IS a fantastic knife!! I am a huge Bark River fan!! You can not go wrong with one of their knives either. Do check out Ranger knives!! You owe it to yourself to! http://www.rangerknives.com/

I´d go for any Ranger Knives RD series, those are made to use'em and, If needed, to abuse them :)

The handle on the Becker is nicer than it looks. It's "GV6H", according to BK&T. I've got a Patrol Machete and like the way it feels. I have long fingers and the thicker handle gives you something to grab onto. While I like Micarta scales on smaller knives I'm a little concerned about the feel on something this size. Also, the close up pictures I've seen of the Ranger makes the handles look pretty "unfinished", though of course looks aren't paramount in a knife like this.

I've been looking at these same knives recently, and am in the same boat. I like 'em all! The Becker BK7 and the Ontario RAT-7 have about the same blade thickness (.1875-.188). The Ranger RD7 is .250". That's pretty darn thick for a 7" knife, but that's part of the allure.

Just food for thought. When you find the perfect knife at the perfect price let me know! :)

Well, I held the rat-7 in my local knife store the other day, and it felt real nice in the hand. Not too heavy, yet a wide, decently thick blade. I was tempted to buy it, but I wanted a plain edge instead of partial serrations. Also, didn't care for the sheath. I have also considered the trail master bowie recently. Little bit big though. And more $. -Hate makin they decisions.
