hello all!
i'm looking for a fixed blade knife for utility use / self defense. laws in my state (tn) mandate blade length less than four inches. aesthetically, a knife with an asian appearance and flavor would be nice, but is by no means necessary. any good recommendations? thanks!

i would like to keep the price expense relatively low, so a custom might be out of the question.
price range is about $100, but $75 or less is more like it.

Ditto the Camillus CQB 2.

4" ATS34, very slim and easy to carry, with canvas micarta handles. Plus the sheath has several carry options. Got a picture of one in my archive:

I believe you can still get a handmade Greco Cub Companion at www.bladeart.com. It's a 3.75 in. bombproof fixed blade that comes in at 50 bucks! Here's a link:

It's too bad you have a 4 inch limit, since Newt Livesay's Uji would be perfect for you. It's a 4.8 tanto with just enough Asian flair that's only 50 bucks!

Or you could shell out 30 bucks and get a CRKT Companion. People love that thing. I think I'll grab one once my wife gives me my allowance :D

No reason to rule out customs. There are plenty of outstanding makers whos work is under-priced. They will turn out wonderful knives at great prices. One that would satisfy your needs and price range is the Cooper Mighty Mite. Give Mike Cooper a shout at L6Steel@aol.com

The blade length on this one is under your 4" limit.
