fixed blade recommendations

I just recently put a thread out about a folder, but I eventually realized that my criteria were stressing the folder designt to far, so I'm going fixed blade. in this area, I don't have alot of experience. I've done some research, but haven't really used a good sized fixed blade. (my friends got a 3" one, but that doesn't count to much)
criteria (yeah, I'm being specific)
- 100 dollar budget
- around 5 inches (5 1/2 is my legal limit, but the bigger the better)
- prefer it not to be spear point
- no brand prefs
- us made is great, but if it's good I'll take it.
- not to delicate
- mostly going to be used in the woods
- don't mention the bear grills survival knife. just don't

that's pretty much it, any input or suggestions are much appreciated

I am looking into an sog seal pup elite or sog nw ranger, any thoughts

Becker BK2. Well under $100, 5 1/4" blade, Drop point blade, USA made, 1095 Cro-Van steel, and definitely NOT delicate.

I love my Buck vanguard but I am getting a BK2 soon because if tanks could come in knife form it would definitely be a BK2

First thought, BK2. For a woods use knife thats limited to 5.5, its about perfect. Its like a bigger knife in a smaller package. It chops, batons, makes feathersticks, and everything else.

Other thoughts: ESEE 4, KaBar MK1, KaBar Short.

FYI these types of threads pop up everyday if not multiple times a day.

It was my first thread I posted too (last month) My criteria was basically the same as yours, heres the thread with A LOT of good suggestions.

Good luck and post a picture of the one you choose!

Yep, BK2 is your best bet. Probably the toughest blade you can get in that price range. The next step up is the ESEE 5, but it costs 3X as much and its improvements aren't absolute necessities.

I'm going to mention one I just got. It is the ZT0160. It has a 5" blade in a simple clip point design. Blade is made from Sandvik 14C28N blade steel, and dlc coated. Black sculpted G-10 handles, which feel great in hand to me. Rides in a kydex sheath that is a well made sheath. Cost is ~$100.

This is not a BK2 though! The BK2 is about as indestructible as they come. It has a .250" thick blade, while the ZT0160 has a .160" thick blade, but for slicing, the ZT is going to perform extremely well. And in general should hold up to any normal, and some abnormal, use. I don't think I would feel underknifed if this was my main knife for hiking, and camping.

Here's a pic of mine with my ZT0200;

What are you going to do with it in the woods? You going to slice stuff? Or you want to chop stuff?

And why not a spear point? Kepharts are classics woods knives and are spear points.

Answer those and maybe I can give you a suggestion!

If you could afford it, I'd get the ESEE 5, BK2 second at like 1/2 price. The cold steel SRK is 6," darn there is a few too large that I like also

to answer your questions...
- I'm gouing to go quite a bit of chopping, but some cutting performance would be great too
- I don't want a spear point because the tend to have less utility use, they are designed for thrust cutting (stabbing) and excel in that area, but are not the best choppers (yes I have tested this and I'm not just mouthing off). they also just dont tend to stand the test of time the way a heavy duty clip or drop point will (at least for me). however if you can find me a spearpoint that can surpass all those problems, I will be very happy and will be forever grateful.

alright guys, bk2 is at the top of the list, simply because it meets all my criteria perfectly, and it's like indestructible.
followed by the zt0160

my main reasoning for wanting this indestructibility, is that I want this to say around for a long while (like when I'm dead knid of while), because it will be my first fixed blade. after this buy, I can buy some more streamlined knives that are mor like the zt0160, because they won't have that, my first fixed blade, value

I really like the Cold Steel Master Hunter. It's got a great blade shape. If I wanted to carry a fixed blade this would be the one.

Based on your criteria I think the Scrapyard 511 would be one heck of a knife for your intended useage IMO SR101 is some of best blade steel out there for a general use fixed and has very nice edge retention without sacrificing much toughness, not to mention it's a Busse-kin and will hold it's value like no other, but there is a downside Scrapyards like all Busse and Busse-kin aren't supplied with a sheath.

hey guys thanks for all the help, I'm getting the Becker bk2, and I'm thinking I'll be really happy with it. thanks guys.
I'll post a pic when it comes

You will be VERY happy with your choice. This is what Becker knives do to people: First you unpack it, then stare in awe as you realize-this is MINE. Then you grasp it, heft it, heft it left, heft it right, then slice/chop some air with it. Then you get this great big smile from ear to ear. You put it into/out of the sheath a few times & then take it back out. Look at it some more & realize that you made a VERY good choice. Yup, thats pretty much how everyone reacts when they hold a Becker for the first time, especially the BK2.
