Fixed blade sheath question.

I just purchased this sheath and I believe it's for a 121 due to it's length but I've never seen one with two rivets. Is that common and I've just never seen it or is it unusual? It has the single stamp "Buck" on the snap and the grooves along the edges of the belt loop. No model number stamped on it though.

Dave, I think somebody added the rivet to stabilize the belt loop. The original sheath has no rivets. Be careful, the other side of the rivet may produce scratches at the knife blade.

Interesting. I have an Atichison sheath (the oldest I own) and even it has a rivet. I just went through all my older sheaths for all my older fixed blades and don't find a one with out a rivet, either smooth or dimpled on the belt loop. Which model do you have with none?

Dave, you make me unsure. I can't have a look in this minute.
It is half past eleven pm now and my wife is still sleeping.
The cabinet with the knives stands in the sleeping room.
Tomorrow morning I'll dig out the sheath. Post more then.

On all the sheaths that I have, the rivet is centered on the loop. Unless this one was a mistake when the rivet was installed (off centered) and one added at the factory?????

The Buck* models, I suspect, would show more sheath rivets, and there were probably some in (among) the knives stamped Buck.

Also, Dave......the dual rivets on your sheath look a bit different from standard Buck, don't they?

Oops, I see I do have a 121 marked sheath with a black and rusty rivet like your two......however, your sheath looks bigger.

There would not be room for two of those rivets on mine.

But.......I now found another 121 marked sheath (newer looking) that is a bit larger and might have room for two rivets.

I actually have a 121 sheath exactly like the picture, and it has 2 rivets as well. I think the one I have is for a BUCK* 121. I would guess it came right after the sewn belt loop style. I say that because the collar strap style sheath would be first, followed by the sewn belt loop, and then the rivets start showing up and continue until the snoopy sheaths appearance. I'm sure if this isn't close someone will correct me.

I have one or two sheaths without rivets bun no one with two.
I didn"t realize before that the sheaths with the sewed belt loop
have a rivet too.

I don't think they do. The first factory knives came with collar strap style sheaths that just had a silver snap, no markings. The next sheaths were the collar strap style with the word BUCK on the snap. When the holster sheath came out it was just marked BUCK on the front, and had a sewn belt loop, with embossed lines. I would think as they progressed they added rivets fro extra stability, if ever the sewing began to break. I think in '69 Buck brought the sheath making in house, and the embossed lines went away.

The history of the sheaths, boxes and paperwork is almost as fascinating as the knives. As we spend time researching the knives the other things start to make more sense.
