Having recently handled a friends XM 18 (Rick Hinderer). I have totally fallen in love with the spanto (tanto/spearpoint) combo type blade. But i am having a hard time justifying another folder :grumpy: ,so i was wondering if there is anyone out there planning to make a medium sized fixed blade spanto? Or maybe Mr. Hinderder is planning something along these lines some time in the future?

The Spanto blade IS Rick's creation. I LOVE that blade shape myself, and the XM-18 IS one of my favorite knives as well. Who knows what Rick will create next. I DO also like the idea of a Spanto FB, that would be the cat's meow!!

That would be awesome, i really like his design of the xm-18 flipper with the fingerguard. Since Mr. Hinderer is so busy filling out his backlog orders for the xm-18, i was also thinking of having a custom maker do a fixed blade version of the xm-18 flipper.

Despite that, i still would want to score an xm-18 once it's available.

Rick isn't taking orders period!! I believe he does take care of military, LEO, EMT/Firefighters.

Who ever said about ordering from Rick! There are other options to score an xm-18. What's important is the right timing when it comes out from dealers or the secondary market.

I would strongly suggest that you ok this with Rick before having someone copy one of his designs.:eek:

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't mean to really have a custom maker copy every detail of Rick's design. If ever it comes into fruition, which to me is far from reality, it will definitely look different.
Plus there's the custom makers input on the proposed design by customers, on whether it's a copyright violation or simply just crossed the line on other maker's turf.

I agree with Bobby B., since you don't plan on asking Rick to do it. That would be the only right thing TO do.

Hey all!

Thanks for all the comments on the XM-18 and the Spanto blade design that i came up with...to answer some questions regarding the Spanto in a fixed blade...I WILL be coming out very shortly with a fixed blade in a Spanto design..in fact the Fixed 3 1/2 in XM-18 has been brought up quite a bit from my LE and military users so of course one is in the works.....

Now about someone copying my designs...I sincerely hope that another maker wont stoop to that level of copying mine or any other makers intellectual property..I dont care if they make it "look" alittle different, the concept is still mine...its still copying..or should I say "stealing"....so please, as customers dont perpetuate this form of stealing by even suggesting it..

I will be coming out with Spanto fixed blades!

Hey Rick,

First off, i humbly apologize if this idea has brought some apprehensions to you. Rest assured i will never suggest to other makers to copy your designs.

Since it came straight from you that a fixed version of the xm-18 is in the works, then do put me on the list for one.

Don

Good for you, Rick! The Spanto is an interesting design....since you are so backlogged, maybe you could do your huge fan base a favor, and a) get a factory collaboration deal going or b) license your fantastically unique design to other knifemakers who could deliver within a year or less.

Just some suggestions, and have a great day!!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

As long as its someone who can deliver the same quality workmanship a factory/ other knifemaker deal sounds very good!

I was never a big knife guy until i handled that xm18! Truly great work Mr. Hinderer!

Oh btw does working for the DOD as a contractor (shipping) give me any priorty (non US citizen) :D ???

Hey Don, No problem, I didnt mean to sound harsh, alot of us makers are very sensitive about the problem of makers copying designs....keep an eye on my website for the intro of the fixed blade Spanto!

Steve, good suggestion on the company colab! another way i am going to fix the problem of not enough XM-18's is what i just recently did and that was build a bigger shop so I can get production up! Stay tuned!

Rick Hinderer

Wish you the best on your bigger shop Rick. Seems like there's a lot of us here are waiting to get hold of xm-18s, both folders and fixed blades.
