As some of you know I am going to be a Marine Reservist, and I am going to Boot Camp in a few months. I dont know if I will see combat or not but I have been looking into a replacement for my Marine Ka-Bar. The two companies that come to mind are Strider and Busse. I dont know if I should buy something as large as my Ka-Bar (6 inch blade) or an inch or 2 smaller. Any help would be welcome. Thanx guys.

Hey Toolin...

You'd be Real hard pressed to find a tougher blade than a Busse..

to be quite honest with you I don't know if there is a step up from a Busse in a production blade...I don't think they get much better...

Look into the Natural Outlaw, Badger Attack or the new Satin Jack....

If ya bust it and I doubt you will,,there is a no questions asked warrenty with it for life....

I'm happy with all 10 that I own...

I really like Busse knives, but I'm partial to the Basic's, which are now discontinued. You can still get them from some dealer's, but I don't know which ones for sure.

I have truly abused my Basic #5, and I have not managed to damage it at all.

Also, the Busse Basics are pretty inexpensive, at least for now.

I was debating between several fixed blades and decided on a Busse Steel Heart. It's a used blade but in new condition. At the price it was going for, in addition to a kydex sheath and the cult like following, it made my decision pretty easy.

Toolin, after spending the weekend at Blade West with both the Striderguys and the Busse people, I'd absolutely have to recommend the Strider knives. Busse knives are certainly heavy duty, but Striders are just plain Bad Ass! Striders feel so alive in the hand. Get one and you'll never regret it.

I just ordered my first Strider, a GS. It had a real strong, sharp tip on it, and seems to be an excellent sticker. It's also very streamlined and compact, with a long cutting edge.

I plan to eventually buy a Busse as well. However, it seems like the Busses are better choppers, and the Striders are better stickers. I think the Striders are also a little more compact. It's just my opinion. In a life or death situation, I'd rather be sticking my opponent instead of chopping or slicing. The Busse may be a better blade for taking out in the woods and using it to build a shelter, however.

As far as durability goes, they are both super durable and they both have lifetime guarantees. Also, the folks I've talked to on behalf of both companies are all real cool. There's no doubt about it, these two companies are on top right now. I don't think you'd go wrong with either one; it's just a matter of holding the blades and seeing which one fits you best.

Don't bring any knife with you to basic training. it will be sent home if you're lucky and confiscated if your're not. When you do get assigned, do not carry any gear that is not expressly authorized.
That being said a good knife may be worth an article 15 to some people.
I'd choose the Busse Basic #7, propably the best combat utility knife ever made. I'd also carry a LM Supertool, wave or pulse or a Victorinox Swisstool.
Take care and be safe,
Chad

Duane Dwyer of Strider Knives was a Marine Sniper, and their proximity to a very large Marine Base on the West Coast is probably no accident. Great guys, and they make knives that have been Marine Corp tested. Mick Strider, BTW, was an Army Ranger. Both have seen the elephant, and have scars to show for it.

Let me add to Jerry's sentiments by saying that the Striderguys are utterly devoted towards ensuring that our forces have the very finest blades available. They have a major DOD contract going on right now, but they are also making sure that their blades fall into the right individual military hands, contract or not.
A Strider knife will not let you down. Ever.

The grip you get on the cord wrapped Striders is outstanding. So in case you need to use it as a pig sticker...;)

Besides, the Striders are just plain cool looking. They have a certain flair that is unique.

I own both busses (straight BM,SH2 and MS) and Striders ( MT,BT,AR,HT,MFS)and don't think you could go wrong with either. If i could take the weight i would mount my Strider BT onto my Busse Battle Mistres and put an AR in my pocket to cover all bases.

Thanx for the replys guys, but I still dont know what to get. They seem to both have their mission. Keep the replys coming, thanx for the help.

I have both a Basic 5 and a Strider MT. For the roll you are talking about I would go with the Strider.

The Busse Natural Outlaw would serve you well. The infi steel they use stays sharp a looooooong time. Busse's are built heavy duty as hell. They are just damned good knives that can stand up to brutal use.

If you wanted something with a lighter weight, you might want to check out a Basic 7.

I don't own any Striders, so I can't vouch for their performance. I have been interested in them for a long time though and I'm sure I'll wind up with at least one sooner or later. Given your choices, I don't think you can go wrong either way!

Just obtained a used Strider BT from a fellow Forum dude and I really, really like it a lot. Also have a Busse Natural Outlaw on order that I'm destined to like probably as much. That should have all of my fixed blade needs met. I'm not an expert, but it seems like the Striders may be a bit preferred as a weapon while the Busses may be a bit preferred as a field knife for all kinds of cutting, chopping, ect.
The BT is a perfect size, I think - not too big. And the Natural Outlaw seems to have a nice balance between handle and blade (concluded just from pictures and talking to the great people at the Busse shop).
Keep in mind that I don't necessarily know what I'm talking about, but I think that I've made two of the best choices on the planet. And, yes, definitely don't take it to boot camp. You will be beaten.

I have several Busse knives, but no Strider knives at the moment. Both companies make some great knives, to me its really up to personal taste. My NO that stays with me 24x7 is giving me a strong taste for more Busses, but I will be getting some Striders also down the road.

Get a Strider HT G10. Small enough not to cause you any problems 4.25" blade, but still able to handle most chores. Not only do get a great knife but you also get a great sheath from SOE and a great warranty. The HT is the Black knife.

Toolin,
Hi, it sounds like you can't go wrong, whichever one you choose. I haven't owned a Busse, but my impression is that most of them are designed to be great choppers.
For a little over a year I've been carrying one Strider or another. For tactical work where size isn't an issue, I carry an MT and it's fantastic. I just got an HT, the same knife fq55 recommended above, and it's also great. Much smaller knife but just as strong. Mine has the cord-wrapped handle which I like much better than G10. I just finished abusing it horribly and it did better than I had any right to expect. Neither of these are great at chopping, but they're so strong I don't hesitate to pound them through wood by hitting the spine with another object. You won't regret buying either brand, just get the one that fits your needs.

fq55, do you know which knife is just to the left of the HT in the bottom picture?
