I'm looking for around a four inch fixed blade that is pretty thin to carry for self defense. Any recommendation? Price range $40

The 5" Cold Steel Kobun would be hard to beat. Very thin and concealable with a strong full tang design and awesome kraton handle.

I own one of these and low have easy it is to carry. Definitely designed as a weapon for self defense. Just cant beat it for the price.

This. I have one. It's fantastic. I have absolutely no complaints, considering its design as a boot knife. I think you're missing out if you don't have one. What a great value this knife is!

Mora Companion.

Thin, around 4 inches, way under 40, you can poke somebody with it, and for the 99.99999999% of the time when you aren't using it for self-defense, it happens to be an excellent knife.

little thick, but if you have every held one with it's rubber grip, it's not slipping out even soaking wet. Around $30.

++1 on the Mora. The Robust is only like $20.00, and it's a great everything knife. That is a tough price point for anything really decent. Also, it is more money, but you should look at the Essee 3, it's also wonderful, albeit more spendy.

I hope you never have to use it in anger.
But if it make you feel safer to pack a fixed blade,
consider the likes of
