Hey people,

I've been searching around and reading various opinions on both these knives.

I'm looking for a fixed blade to carry around me when I'm outdoors - but also something that I can depend on for hard use.

Okay.. so BK&T 10 Crewman and the Ontario TAK are my main considerations. They are both hard use knives and the price difference for me is negligible. However, I want your input on the pros/cons/differences and suitability of each.

In particular, how does the grip compare, cutting performance, edge retention and the quality of the sheaths stack up?

Any similar offerings in the same price range you would also suggest?

BK10
Blade Steel: 0170-6C Carbon
Handle Material: GV6H
Blade Length: 5.5"
Sheath: Kydex-lined Propex Nylon

TAK-1
Blade Steel: 1095 Carbon
Handle Material: Green Canvas Micarta
Blade Length: 4-5/8"
OAL: 10"
Weight: 10oz
Sheath: Cordura

Thanks a lot,

-- Vince.

I really don't think you'd be disappointed in either choice. I own both the Becker and the Ontario. Both in MHO are great use knives. Pick you favorite and enjoy.

The main difference in grip is sheer size. Becker handles are big and round, so if you've got larger hands, you might find their offerings more comfortable. I'd take the Becker sheath over the TAK's, since you get an accessory pocket that's great for a mini survival kit, multitool, etc. I'd also trust the Becker more for real abuse like prying.

That being said, the TAK is on my wishlist. I prefer smaller fixed blades, and while Becker's offerings are solid, they're just too overbuilt for my needs.

I have medium size hands and find both grips comfortable, although if I had to choose it would be the TAK-1. I think the Becker would be slippery under heavy constant use (sweaty hands), but a little grip tape would cure that. As for the sheath choices, the Becker does have that handy pocket, and yes my leatherman resides there. Is there any chance you could handle both knives before you purchase one? Once again I think you'd be satisfied with either.

I will definitely try to, but I dont know where - i'm in Australia and the market is very small for these sorts of things.

P.S. Lol, dont tell me i'm gonna need to buy both :3

I seem to remember reading a post from Mr. Becker saying that the handle was made smooth in order to minimize skin irritation during prolonged use. It makes sense to me.

I find the Becker handles very comfortable. They are amoung my favorites. The large butt-end of the grip makes it much more secure in my hand than most other handles. The smooth surface has never been a problem.
