I was wondering if my fellow forumites could help me with an issue. I am going to Hawaii this summer to work on a charter boat, and would like to take a fixed blade with me as well as my Vaquero Grande. I'm currently thinking of mostly SOG's, but some of the Beckers catch my eye as well. Currently, the main choices are SOG Seal 2000, SOG Pentagon Fixed Blade, SOG Bowie Factory Second, SOG Tsunami, Becker 7, and the SOG Tigershark. These knives must be carried openly, as hawaii has some pretty strict carry laws. On a day to day basis they will be used for cutting: rope, fishing line, cardboard, fish, paper, small trees (don't ask), pigs and kitchen use. The Pentagon seems a little small for all these, but anything bigger would scare the sheeple, althought if they do make a comment I suppose I could just tell them to do something physically impossible :) . But, that is beside the point. Also: it must be under $150. Thanks.

I'd suggest the Benchmade 140 for ya. Get the 154CM version if u r worrying about corrosion/rust. However, I won't see much problem with the M2 model if it is being probably cared for. (just flush it with flesh water and dry it fully like, at the end of the day everyday.) I'd actually prefer to go through the maintainence on the M2 instead of getting the 154CM myself cuz I like that blade in that steel so much now and taking care of it is simply a joy for me.

If you're working on a charter boat than I suppose you could carry whatever you want since it's not like you're walking around town with it. However you'll probably dress pretty light since it's normall pretty warm here so unless you plan on stabbing pigs or cutting down small trees on the boat I'd suggest a folder with a serrated edge for cutting the abrasive stuff like rope. With regular care a carbon blade will do fine but it'll have to be very regular because steel rusts like crazy here, especially exposed to salt water, sweat, and fish blood. My preference would be for something with a stainless steel blade, it'll definately be more forgiving if you can be forgetful like me. The same folder would probably do fine for your EDC as well something from Spyerco or Benchmade with a pocket clip would work great. Don't plan on carrying a 6 inch plus fixed blade around in public, save that for when you're romping around the forest or working in the yard. The Beckers would work great for those duties. Hope you have a great time here.

Aloha

Hawaii doenst have strict carry laws........balisongs are illegal (gravity) and double edged knives are illegal (as they are almost everywhere)

I have asked at the Firearms Window at HPD numerous times whats the limit on folders............they dont care..............

You cant carry a gun..........and I wouldnt walk down Waikiki with a big knife on my belt, but basically, if you arent up to no good, you wont be bothered.

I'd go for the SOG SEAL or the Becker. As Knight939 stated correctly I maight add, that stuff here rusts like crazy. But which ISLAND are ya gonna be on in Hawaii? Mr. MAYO gave you the Oahu point of view, now here is the Big Island point of view...The cops here don't really care too much as long as it ain't no "Rambo" knife! LOL!

I have tested the SOG Folders bead blast, and it has survived quite well here...I also have an RTAK for around the yard, and only the edge gets affected by the weather here...I am assuming that the Becker will fare the same...

God bless!

Spyderco Temperance. I think I would also want a full serrated folder…maybe a Pacific Salt. Probably would bring a multitool, a Sharpmaker and some fillet knives.

Aloha man!

That's in Maui...not to sure about the trips there regarding knife carry...I'd still go for that SEAL.

BTW, I was just up there in July, and my brother said that there's hardly any boars at all...

Sorry I couldn't help out to much...
