I need some suggestions.

Im looking for a fixed blade whittler. I dont need a set of carving/whittling knives, just a single knife I can grab when I am bored. I think the blade should be along the lines of narrow clip point, like on Schrades Gunstock trapper. I narrow blade and thin tip is preferred, but without being so thin that it will snap with any side pressure at all.

I currently use some SAKs, a small trapper or stockman (depending on mood), however I just want a nice small FB to be used mainly for whittling, but could also do everyday small cutting jobs.

Any good factory suggestions, or ideas I could discuss with a maker?

How about a Spyderco Temperance? It has a VG-10 steel blade that'll stay sharp for a long time, and has a comfortable handle.

Jeez, try these from Ragnar. #'s 1240, 1241 and 1260. 9 bucks apiece and 5.00 shipping no matter how many you order. nothin' fancy, but they work great for me. Much better than my SAK or Middleman. Thin, strong blades that are easy to sharpen and three blade shapes that will do at least 90% of your whittling tasks. My 2 cents.

John had the same thoughts as I did on this one. Ragweed forge has just what you need at reasonable prices. A more expensive custom piece will give you bragging rights and something more to admire while whittling away the time, but a good puukko type knife will get the whittlin' job done at considerably less cost.

Enjoy!

All the best,
Mike U.

The Temperance looks like a nice cutting tool, but isn't the right shape for a whittling knife which has to be much slimmer like the Dozier. I just got back into whittling recently and ordered the 1260 from Rangar for that purpose, among other things. For a truely optimal pieces you are looking at a custom multi-blade slip joint.

A short and narrow clip, spear, or wharncliffe blade will handle any general whittling. The Scandanvian and Dozier blades mentioned above should be excellent choices.

I picked up a pair of Gene Ingrams in D2, check out his stuff, it works very nicely.

Here's some from A.G. Russell

Thanks for the suggestions. The knives from ragweedforge and AG Russell look like just the thing.

I actually had one of the Doziers once. That was back in the day when I was trading knives off as fast as I could get them. Now I kick myself for stupidly getting rid of so many knives. Live and learn I guess.

Thanks again!
