Fixed Blade with a scratch...

I bought a knife on Ebay and though it was described and flawless it has two scratches on the blade. I think I got a good deal and more importantly, I really like the knife, so I'm going to keep it.

I wonder what to do about the scratch though. Leave it? It draws my eye every time I admire the knife. It has a brushed finish and I thought about polishing it to bring out the scratch but the name is only lightly etched into the blade and I think it would wear off with polishing. And then there's the value. If I leave it or polish it will it degrade it's value. I realize that to me it has high value now but what of later. It's a production knife made in Japan but is high quality manufacture (as perceived by this novice eye). The name is "High Rangers".

Anyway, I would like to ask for an opinion on what is the best way of dealing with the scratch.

Thanks....JC III

My advice is to enjoy the knife, use it, and add some "character" (scratches) of your own :D. Every scuff and scratch on a knife tells a story.

Can't say about the value being hurt, but if you bought the knife and intend on using it i wouldnt worry about hurting the value, Im like you I like things to look perfect even if I am going to or are using them. Your going to add your own scratches to it if using it so I would say don't worry about it, if you really cant not worry about it buff them out. Ive learned: Enjoy what you buy you only live once, so use what you buy and be happy.

Scratches don't really bother me. I have received brand new knives from makers that had scratches on the blade. Probably from a little dirt in the sheaths. I could have sent the knives back and had the scratches taken out but figured what the heck, the blade is only going to get more scratches on it anyhow, so why bother?

If you are worried about value, do not polish the blade. That has the distinct possibilty of lowering the value more than the scratches will.
