Can anyone recommend a fixed blade knife with a 4" to 5" blade under $50.I am just going to use it in the garden and don't want to spend a lot.

For garden use, pick any Mora. If "garden use" doesn't mean tree felling for you, that is.

Go to Goodwill or Salvation Army and dig in the kitchen utensils until you find something, probably going to cost about $1.

+1 Or you might sharpen up a trowel on one side. A stainless steel Mora or such. Opinel makes a folding garden knife that is used for pruning. Old Hickory, Dexter Russell, Victorinox, etc. all make inexpensive knives that are meant to be wore out.

You might want to check eBay for an old USA Schrade X-Timer. That's what I use for a "lawn and garden" knife. Some models were also sold under the Outdoor Life and Rigid brand names. I have no idea what kind of steel was used - the packaging on mine didn't give much info - but the handles are rubberized and have excellent traction. Mine hasn't suffered any ill effects from exposure to water or the occasional rock, and yes, I even batoned with it just to see how it would do.
