Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but does anyone remember the old Herters Improved Bowie? It`s a pretty traditional design. Their catalog was pretty neat, and had lot`s of good reading in it. One thing George Herter was sure good at was advertising, everything he sold was "the best", according to him. From duck calls, to guns, (anyone remember the 401 Herter`s Powermag?), to knives, nothing else compared to his. I came across an original, and decided to make my own version of the Herters Improved Bowie.

Here is an original Improved Bowie I stumbled across a few years ago in a small resale shop, along with a Herters duck call, and a book written by George Herter.

Here is my version of the Improved Bowie. It`s specs are the same as the original. The handle is walnut.

Here are the original and mine together.

Very nice clean looking working knife!

Only thing I'd change is to soften up the edges of the finger notch, and round it out like on the original. Crisp edges can be irritating after a while of really working with the tool. Smooth out angles.

Carl.

Working on that right now, after that I`ll be oil finishing the handle.

Here it is after rounding the handle and applying the oil finish to the handle.

looks like a perfect boning and trimming knife, easy to index and smooth with no hotspots. i like the bit of finger indent on yours

That looks like a nice little knife you made. It looks like it would do real well around the camp or kitchen.

I remember Herters well. My dad bought fiishing and camping gear from them. In fact I have a canoe sitting in my backyard that was shipped to us over 40 years ago.

That canoe is still good enough to take the white water we see. If his bowie was as well made, it's a heck of a knife.

That looks like a great design for everything from boning and cleaning a fish to cutting a good steak at the dinner table.
Nicely done. Thanks for bringing the Herter's name up too. It gives me some reading to do.

Herters Catalogs: sure brings back memories. :)

My Grandfather would get out a Catalog and we would thumb through the black & white pages together. He would point out equipment and tell me what was good and bad about it, to teach me what is best and needed, when in the bush.
