Hello,

This is my first post. Quick poll: Fox Predator or Fox Trakker

About myself: I live in Northern Canada. I am a member of the Canadian Army. I do enjoy camping, hiking, and practicing my survival skills. I am looking to buy this fixed blade for all field purposes and not EDC. For EDC I do have CRKT M16-10KZ - Tanto ( http://www.crkt.com/M16-10-EDC-Black-GlassFilledNylonHandle-AutoLAWKS-Combo-Edge ). I do plan on leaving the CRKT at home if I go to the field and/or overseas. I was considering the Fox Trapper w/ micarta grip as well but it lacks the double finger guard that these two have.

Fox Predator: ( I would get the spear point in black not camouflage)

Blade 15cm
Overall 30cm
Weight 300 g

Fox Trakker:

Blade 14 cm
Overall 28 cm
Weight 350 g

Both blades are: full tang, same thickness, same steel, same grip, same sheath.
I feel that the Trakker is the superior chopper (and crusher), possibly better at shaping tools, perhaps less likely to break.
I feel that Predator would be the best in combat, the spear point edge would be easier to maintain in the field, serrations may come in use (urban and/or wilderness survival).
I am looking for one knife I can be dropped into an area and survive with (along with some other essential kit). I do plan on having a multitool with me that has a small serrated saw (not tested on nails yet though).

All opinions are appreciated.

Good choice with Fox. Go with the Pred spearpoint. A lot to love in the design, and darn good european steel. I have a few blades in N690 myself.
The Trakker is good, too, but for military use, a lighter more all-purpose blade will do you better. Don't let "use in combat" come too into play here...I've only met a handful of guys who actually got knife kills, and they were all sf (not a single one infantry).

Cheers!

I have a little off topic question. I'm going into the Canadian military quite soon, what can you tell me about knives and having them with you while in uniform?

I can tell you this: Many units, Commanders, & people in charge, will not let you wear anything that is not issued. I would check first to see what is or is not allowed, before you spend your money.

Awesome! Thanks! Personally I'd go with the Trakker. The only thing that seems to hold you back from it is that the Predator has a combat edge to it. To be honest, I'd rather slash whatever attacked me in the wilderness rather than stab. Stabbing seems like a better tactic against people. That Trakker looks like it would easily hack limbs right off. I'd go with the Trakker as it's got many more applications than the Predator, and also seems it would put up with a lot more crap and stress.

Both use stainless steel, and as far as I know (no idea what's with all those numbers and letters after it) will not hold an edge quite as long or be quite as strong as other steels. I could be wrong as I'm still quite new to the steel language.
