Recently I have been doing a lot of studying and comparing of my fixed blade Spyders and some that I don't have. I find the fixed blade Temperance to be one of the most utilitarian fixed blade knives I have ever used. The ergonomics of this knife are great. I have even added 2 of them to my kitchen knife line up.

I do think that Spyderco's fixed blades have been largely overlooked and ignored. The Ronin for instance is a great utility fixed blade when a long blade would be undesirable in certain instances. The Moran is just about a perfect sized skinning knife for large and small game both. I guess what I am wondering is why I hear so little about the fixed blades in the Spyderco line up? It also amazes me how many fellow Spyderco collectors that I chat with all the time who have never even ever tried one of the Spyderco fixed blades  .

These blades are terribly underrated and under-appreciated IMO. WHY!!!??? The Temperance for instance has just about replaced all of my kitchen knives except for the Spyderco K-05 that is my old standby. It is just so comfortable when preparing vegetables or cutting up meat and fish. I just recently got me a SPOT which is somewhat unusual and I have a Swick on my immediate want list. But I just don't see much enthusiasm about the fixed blade Spyders  . When I talk to fellow knife nuts about them it amazes me how many collectors and afficionados just ignore them or show no interest in them. I truly wish Spyderco would re-introduce the Temperance with a Micarta handle. I love the ergonomics of the original factory handle which is good enough to get by on but I would really love to see a more serious handle on that model in particular. I really want to hear from you all about the FB Spyders>> good or bad I want to hear it.

I think part of it may that some people just don't think of fixed blades when they think of Spyderco. There are some awesome FB designs in the Spyderco lineup. The Ronin and Temperance as you mentioned, and I'd also chime in for the Perrin and the Kumo. Still, my feeling is that most folks primarily, or perhaps solely, associate Spyderco with folders.

Maybe because Spyderco makes so many folders that excel in their roles people look only to their folders at the expense of the fixed blades. You mention the Moran model being good for skinning game. Perhaps others use a Wegner design folder for that same purpose, as well as using it as their EDC because they can't or don't want to carry a fixed blade.

I have a Moran Featherweight and a Kumo. I love them both, especailly the Moran. I'd really like to get my hands on a Perrin and a Ronin, too.

I also think an upgraded Temperance would be awesome. I love the blade shape on the knife, but I've never been able to get over how ugly the handles are.

I can hardly wait to get the forthcoming scaled down Perrin model. The original was too big for me to legally carry. The new one should be just right.

I also love the Temperance FB, but I'd like to see a larger version...Perhaps with a 2-3" longer blade, and a 1" longer handle..

I have the Moran Featherweight, Temp PE, Temp SE, and Perrin Bowie.

These are all very high quality fixed blades and will hold their own with anything on the market in this price range.

I don't do a whole lot of "outdoorsy" type stuff, so I don't really need a fixed blade utility knife.

I also don't think I could get away with carrying one for self-defense. Heck, it is against the law for me to carry any knife with a blade over 3.5 inches. If I have to conceal something large, I'd rather that it was my pistol.

That being said, I would LOVE to have a Kumo.
