Why does Buck not offer steel options for fixed blade knives? A 119, 120, or 124 with a BG-42 or s30v would be excellent. Why is s30v not option for a 110 custom? With regards to s30v why is Cabelea's so special?

D6O,
I'm no hunter, but from those I've talked to, the 420HC steel is easier to get an edge back in the field than the higher grade steels.

I used the Cabellas S30V 110 and 192 Vanguard this past hunting season. Previously used an older 110.

The S30V was as sharp as the old one to start with, but it held the edge much much longer than the older steel. I could field dress a couple of deer with an old 110 and 5 to 6 with the S30V.

Now, the older 110 sharpened back up in a heartbeat. I have sharpened on the S30V on and off and have as yet to get it back to the sharpness it cane from the factory with.

However in all fairness, I have sharpened the old one hundreds of times and have MY edge on it. I am thinking that once I get MY edge on the S30V then it will be faster to sharpen.

Nearly any new knife I have ever sharpned, initally took longer. Thats probably a norm.

And, I did use an Ats34 Alpha folder some, but not enough to dull it . It was just a little too fat in my hand and heavier than the 110. This makes a difference when you are dressing 3 or 4 deer at a time.

Thy some searches on Alaskan 110. We kicked this around a few months ago and you may find more cool info.

As far as Customs....

S30V, BG42, Ats34, makes me no difference other than having a little more value. But 440, 420 would work fine for me. As I am not ever going to use a Custom anyway.

But,,,there is a small Signature Series fixed blade 805 in S30V that would make an excellent knife for dressing/processing deer. '

Like you said, why can't we get this steel in a "USER" type fixed blade.

There's actually FOUR of the S30V Buck Signatures available. The aforementioned 805, which I have, along with an 802 (based on the 102 Woodsman), an 803 (based on the 103 Skinner), and a 819 based on the 119. The rosewood handled Alpha Hunters were ATS34, the Buck website is showing them in 154CM now (practically the same steel anyways). SO, that makes 4'', 5'', and 6'' clip points, a 4" skinner, and some 4'' drop points all available in upgrade steels.

Haven't gotten to use the S30V 805 much yet. Skinned, gutted and cut up two rabbits with it last hunting season. The edge was good, but not as good as I thought it COULD be, so I put the sharpening to it, and now it is just ferociously sharp. Got lots of hope for it next hunting season!

So far, I have one knife in S30V, one in ATS34, and two in D2 steels. Compared to all the others, in various common steels, I'd have to say that the exotic steels are worth the extra money. The 420HC is OK, but the fancy stuff is even better.

.

In addition to those models already mentioned, Buck has previously released the 119 with BG-42 and ATS-34 steels.
