So, I work retail, at a local pet store. It's a family-owned company that I worked at for just shy of three years before I moved to Denver, and they were gracious enough to re-hire me with a raise back into my full position as assistant manager (which is as high as one can realistically go in the company without marrying into the family.)

It's an alright job, and I love it. I love it so much, I decided to make it incredible.

I decided to become retail Batman.

I've always carried knives there, and they know me as the resident knife guy. When I was first promoted years ago, I bought an 0561 as my first "very expensive" knife. I, of course, since purchased, sold, carried, and used dozens of knives 2-3x that value since then, but now currently carry a vanilla 0801 to work for my folder needs. That pretty much does the trick.

Who just wants things to be satisfactory, though? Screw that.

The Setup:

  • Police utility belt, the foundation for the whole setup.
  • Stainless Steel Sharpie, because ridiculous = better
  • Bolt action Boker KID Pen, for the aforementioned reasons. Also, quite pleasant to use.
  • CRKT Dragon, wharncliffe utilitarian godliness
  • Carbon steel scissors, capable of cutting through thick gauge metal wire. These replaced the laser-guided scissors I had that broke. Solution: Tougher scissors.
  • Leatherman OHT, for everything that doesn't need cutting.
  • Cut and impact resistant gloves (wire mesh and rubber padding built-in), with a nitrile coating on the palm. I work with a lot of sharp things, heavy things, and chemicals at work. Best gloves imaginable.

I can't wait to get to work most days. I also can't believe I get away with it.

Anyway, having a fixed blade at work has been an absolute pleasure. I can break down boxes by using the skullcrusher end of the Dragon (thus sparing the edge), and the gloves keep the impact from scraping or bruising my hands. The long straight edge is crazy useful at work, and I have it set up so that I can draw the knife from the sheath in a dagger grip and cut the first bit of tape on a box in one smooth motion. I can even do this and sheath it comfortably while crouching.

The complete confidence I can place in the knife, accompanied by the knowledge that I can replace it relatively inexpensively and sharpen it super quickly on my wicked edge, has been wonderful. No more boxcutters falling apart, no more tape on my 0801, no more carrying two folding knives, no more getting my pockets dirty just getting to my knife because my hands are covered in something (!!!)...

Does anyone else have a job that allows them to use a fixed blade at work? Please share your experiences, thoughts, and feedback.

Also, I'll take any suggestions as far as proposed additions to the belt. A measuring tape with a level is on the list already.

I have to admit that when I saw the belt I thought that it'd be ridiculous to wear but in the pics of you wearing it I think it's perfectly fine !
It doesn't stick out like the batman utility belt or look even the slightest bit crazy- well done !

If I could get away with that at work I'd do it too. It'd be nice to give my fixed blades more use than just hunting and camping.

I've never seen a stainless sharpie before, it's awesome; I'm off to shop for one now :)

You have a Tetris tat while wearing a gameboy shirt. You sir win!

I spent most of the early-to-mid 90s in the backseat of an 85 Camry playing tetris on an old gray brick gameboy :D

You may be able to get the stainless sharpies at Office Depot, and/or some wally worlds. Amazon typically has the best price, though.

I like the Dragon so much I might buy another one with a black handle and switch it out with the brown-handled Dragon for home use ( I leave the whole belt setup at work, usually. Took it home today to clean the OHT, get a RMA for the gloves as the nitrile is crumbling after only a week or so, and sharpen the Dragon). It should be even more discrete that way.

Really, the only people who can tell me to stop either think it's awesome or are never around me. I'll be amazed if I can keep the Dragon on the belt for a very long time. I'm sure someone will wet themselves at the sight of something non-blunted and make me out like some kind of serial-killer-waiting-to-happen.

Of course, if I was going to kill someone, I wouldn't use any of my knives. Do you know how much corrosion blood can cause? No thank you.

You work with boxes all day right? I move a few thousand pounds in boxed coins every day myself. I'd suggest a pair of Ironclad's box handler gloves. Should last a good while. I doubt yours will share the same beating as mine and I only have to buy a new pair every year.

I also carry a fixed blade at work, but mine's smaller and hides in my body armor. They're just so much easier to deal with in gloves. As for the belt and whatnot, I'm actually required to wear one. Gotta have something to attach the holster to.

I carried a Winkler belt knife at work all last winter. It is rather large but I work outdoors so I can cover it up. I'm regularly in the woods but sometimes in the city or suburbs. When I am around people I prefer something smaller like an Emerson PUK or Benchmade NimCub. Its not hard to cover a fixed blade with just a T-shirt if it rides fairly high on the belt. I had a buddy make a kydex sheath for the Benchmade so it will ride as high as the other two I mentioned.

I work as a Service Manager at a local family-style restaurant. I'll have been there four years later this month.
Since I've been bit by the knife bug I've carried at least full size griptilian with me every day.
As I've progressed my daily carry extends to a Benchmade 940, streamlight protac 1l, gerber dime multi tool, zippo WW2 replica lighter, and my Swamp Rat rodent solution.

Overkill it may be but there's yet to be a day I don't use every tool at least once.
That CRKT dragon has me intrigued, nice setup .
Mind mentioning the brand of gloves?

Dude! So that's what you look like haha. Judging solely from your posts, I pictured you a little older and hairier haha.

Great set up. I've always wanted to pick up a Dragon. It's a handy design, regardless of it's intended use.

I was thinking something similar :)

I liked the Dragon as well, but I just don't use fixed blades much. Its very inexpensive for what you get. I believe its 9CR18MoV, which is a small step up from the standard 8Cr and doesn't seem to increase price at all.

Hey, remember - you don't carry them because you know you're going to need them every day, you carry them because you know you might.

Superior SKBFNTVB Emerald CX Gloves - however, I'm actually returning mine as they are slightly defective (rough spots on the inside liner causing callouses). With any luck, there are similarly batmannish gloves out there for me... But it took me forever to find those.

Cool post, Uppance.

Check out stores/sites that deal in law enforcement equipment for the gloves. Galls has a LOT of options.

Can't say I would be willing to wear such a rig anywhere but at a gunshow or in the outdoors.
