Is there any advantage with buying an Older 100 series Buck fixed blade for using vs buying a new version ?

It seems that you can purchase a lot of different 100 series knives that have also been users - slightly used - for less than new prices. Someone else has already put a few scratches on it so you won't feel bad when you put a few more on it. Just compare new prices to what is available on the secondary market. Buy from a seller that has a good reputation. And, if you know how to sharpen a well used knife, there are some real bargains.

How old?
I like the "Edge 2000" on the newer knives.
I agree that if your good at putting an edge on an older knife there are some really good knives to be had. Especially if it's going to be used.

But the newer Bos heat treatment steel is that a significant advantage over the older different steels?

I've read Paul Box started doing heat treat for Buck in the 70's.
How old do yo want to go?

The biggest thing I've noticed lately is the edge grind.. the newer models have what looks like a 12-13 dps angle . The original Edge 2000 was a touch steeper.
I am only comparing 420hc models in this comment. My Sharpmaker does 15 dps. So that is what they get.
That said , my go to is a 1997 105 that sharpens great on 20 dps on the Sharpmaker.
I guess it boils down to what equipment you have and your comfort level at sharpening. We've got some folks here that can put a razor edge on a toothpick with the kool sharpening equipment they have.
