this weekend i acquired a brand new gp100 6" in satin finish. this is my new range gun, and having already put 300+ rounds through it, i'm in love.

i'm already planning on personalizing the weapon. what i'd like is a new set of grips for the weapon that are shorter and thinner. i have smallish hands, and the stock grips are too large and bulkly for my taste. i already bought a hogue monogrip and tried it out, but it fits me like garbage so i'll be getting rid of that soon .i'm already looking into getting pachmayer "compaq" grips. any other ideas?

and my big question is... i know it's common for people to switch out fixed-type sights for adjustable sights, but how about the other way around? i hate adjustable sights. i hate how flimsy they are, how the catch on everything, and how the add sharp edges and unsightly looks to the weapon. i'm looking for the absolute, lowest profile, fixed sights possible for the ruger gp100, both front and rear. any ideas?

thanks

I've never had the problems you mention with Ruger adjustable sights. Have you really had these problems, or are you merely speculating that they are possible ?

Bowen, I believe, makes a fixed sight replacement for S&W revolvers, but I don't know about the GP100. Ruger does makes a fixed sight version of it, so you might consider a trade.

Lacking those options, it would be a custom job to weld up the rear, recut a rear sight channel and reblue it. This makes the trade option look better and better.

.

hiya,

i'm just speculating. i have yet to experience any issues with the adjustable sights on my ruger (having had it for 2 days).

ruger doesn't make a fixed sight version in 6". i have a fixed sight version of their sp101, however. also a fantastic gun. actually, the absolute perfect gun for me. if i could have an sp101 with a longer barrel, i'd be ecstatic.

That'll cost you more than an off-the-shelf gun but it's not a big job for a gunsmith.

i would at least look at some of the replacement wood grips from hogue, for one, they feel great imho, better than the rubber ones, and look 10X better, i put some on my detective special and like them a lot better than the pach compacs i did have on it. several other companies also make replacement wood grips for revolvers at all different prices.

adjustable sights on ruger revolvers are plenty heavy duty imho, i would stick with them myself.

you would be much better off to just trade the gun for one with fixed sights. The ruger adj sights are pretty durable though and would probably serve you well. ahgar
Seems like i've seen a 4" sp101 somewhere, anything longer than 4" in a pistol is wrong. ahgar

GP100s... You could get the 3" and 4" with fixed sights and the small form grip. Or, you could get the 4" and larger with adjustable sights and the large form grip.

I got the 4" fixed. "Like it" would be an understatement. If you can "suffer" through a 4", I would just go find one. Gunsmith work is typically pricey (and justifiably so.)

BTW - I bought the larger grip for $15 off Ebay. It feels like a VERY different gun between the two factory grips. I like the smaller one better.

Part of the beauty of a 6" 357 is the precise sight picture posiible with the longish barrel. Also, the diversity ammo is tremendous, but to avail yourself of these things, and hit the target consistently, good sights are key. I'd give your adjustable sights a good try before removing them.
