Which is a better self defense weapon?

I have a commander, and am a big fan of emerson quality. But, not sure if I want a folder or a fixed for the Karambit.

Is the size, angles, etc better on either one? It seems like the super karambit is a bit bigger, but not sure if the angles are a bit different. Which feels more solid?

Lastly, how concealable is the fixed blade w/ sheath?

Thanks

I have never even held the fixed blade model, so I can't comment on it.

I live in Calif, where I can legally carry a 4" folder concealed, but any fixed blade must be carried unconcealed. I prefer to always carry concealed, so the choice is easy for me....I have to go with the folder. Best to stay stealthy, anyway.

I have both the standard Karambit and the Super. The standard fits my hand nicely, but the Super is just a tad bit bigger than I like. Not so much bigger that I wouldn't carry it (it is my EDC carry knife!), but if I could wave a magic wand and make the handle just slightly smaller, I sure would.

The Karambit is a wicked weapon, and I find it the ideal weapon for carry in urban areas.

if you can carry a fixed blade that will always be a better choice than a folder for SD. The fixed blade Kerambit is pretty good and is quite thin so fairly easy to carry in what ever method you might want, but i find there is better options available for fixed kerambits, the Derespina Mod. 10 is one of my favoured kerambits for the money.
For folders its hard to beat the standard combat kerambit from EKI the super (as stated) is larger but no less effective im sure !
It would be a good idea to get to a shop and handle the range to see what you like the most, if possible, or just buy them all :D

Thanks recon and haze.

That derespina looks very cool, what is a good price for it, any favorite internet shop?

I wish there were a b&m place that I could go to take a look at these different models.

I'm still trying to find out the rules for fixed vs folding blades. I checked a few of the knife laws, and i haven't found any mention of fixed versus folding blades...but there is a very wide description of illegal knives, described as "dangerous knives" in possession, with intent to harm...

I certainly don't intend to harm someone with this, unless my life is in danger...

For a Mod 10 id expect to pay about $80 give or take, you might find them on ebay but NGK seem to have them in stock so its probably wise to go with them.
If you have any doubts about the legality of carrying a fixed blade its probably a good idea to ask here in the "knife laws" forum just for a bit of extra info. to see where you stand with the law.
Also, id adivse you to make or buy a trainer of some sort to play with as well, if you dont already have one

Hmm.... I've handled the three versions of EKI's combat karambits and it really all depends on what you are going to do and how you would want to carry it.

The Fixed blade has a very slim handle profile so if you have larger hands it might feel like you have some space left in your hand, I found the fixed blade to be perfect for carrying in either a pocket or on a belt and the slim design makes consealing it much easier.
The Super Combat Karambit is more of my fav since the ring hole is a bit larger than the smaller Combat Karabit. I love the larger blade since it just screams intimidation but I don't know the laws in your area so you might want to findout if you can carry a 3.7 inch folder first.
The Combat Karambit with the 2.7 inch blade is amazing as well but the smaller ring hole might be a problem especially if you have large hands, I like the size slightly more cause if you hold it close to your arm it is a bit harder to see (reverse direction/ upside down) so it won't draw as much attention as say having a large 4 inch folder like a CQC-11.

You can't really go wrong with a karambit when used for self defence and from personal experience it is a lot harder to disarm a person with one plus the factor that the hook shape is not as commonly seen as a normal knife so say an attacker sees it.. they will probly take a second and think about attacking a person with a tiger claw blade hahaha! Hope this gives you some useful info! :D

....and back that Karambit up with a La Griffe (drawn from the other side).

I too found the hole on the standard Karambit to be to small....but some sand paper took care of that real quick!

I have Combat Karambit folder and fixed blade, besides of easiness to carry compare to fixed Karambit, I find that the folder is easier to deploy. And if you still want a fixed blade, take a look at Derespina Model 10 :)

hey guys,

Thanks for all the helpful ideas.

I just ordered a derespina model 10, and will probably order an emerson sometime in the near future as well.

Happy holidays.
