Hey everybody. I just moved to San Francisco and was reading up on my local knife laws. I've been wanting to carry a fixed blade and I know that it needs to be carried openly on the hip but what's confusing me is where I can carry it when it comes to "public places." Penal Code 171.b states that a weapon can't be carried into public buildings or places of meeting. Do local parks like baseball fields and dog parks etc. count as "places of meting?" Any info on this could help. (And yes I know that none of your answers count as legal consultation) Thanks guys!

Not sure about SF public parks, but as a general rule in America, my understanding is that it's up to the police what is acceptable. If its a public park with kids playing soccer and whatnot, a cop might ask "why the big knife?". If its a forest type park where a big knife makes sense, it's probably no big deal. It all comes down to the perception of the enforcers of said laws.

Being a Californian I take an interest in California knife laws so I did a little searching. And here's what I found regarding carrying knives in parks in San Francisco-

Basically, under the San Fransisco Park Code, Section 4.01. (b), it says "No person shall, in any park" "possess dirk knives, bowie knives or similar knives". I left out everything that didn't pertain to knives. And it didn't specify what type of parks. So I would err on the side of caution and not carry any fixed-blades in any park located in San Francisco. Stick to folders when visiting a park.
