i've been working on a new handle for an old kukri for some time, here and there. the epoxy is well and set, and it has another coat of oil after that last final re-sanding touchup - amazing how a prior coat of oil can show niggling little flaws that, well, grate on the ar-teest in one. i'll have to polish and clean the blade, and i happen to have some nice brown cowhide in my scrap bin to redo the now very old leather and dry sheath - pictures sometime...

today got my special from 1/27 (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=385731), as promised, the GRS had some rust, in fact, has some interesting pitting patterns all along the non hardened portions, and a bit of interesting scuffs (salt?) on the sheath - i'm guessing this has seen some extensive moisture. handle is going to want some sanding and some tung oil too. i feel blessed to have my first kukri from HI that i actually want to "goto town on". oh, and it's dull as sin. i've had a few HIs that were *almost* shaving sharp, and several that were just chopping sharp. so i get to review the sharpening videos and try out some new techniques - i found 3 grades of sanding blocks (think mouse pads with sandpaper on premade) at home despot, 100, 150, and 340 i think. should provide a good start over all. can move right up to 2000 grit emory paper. pictures on that too sometime (bit lazy with pictures, as i don't have a hosting site, and editing for attachments is a pain).

whee! a fruitful day to craft.

I've reworked all my HI knives. Well not the ones hiding from the mrs. But today those knives are coming out of hiding. Tomorrow's me birthday and I'm using the occasion to bring out the rest. That means five new projects. I'm going to do a sheath for each one I intend to carry into the blue wonder. I'm going to derouge and reshape all the handles. I'll put a satin finish on any horn handles, and all the blades too. (Except the Jange, that blade is dayum pretty as is.):D

heh, i have a friend that collects guns. his wife knows he has N guns. he can get away with a couple extra, but as long as the number is the same, he's safe. what she doesn't know is that he sells old ones, and buys new ones, that are far more expensive. same number, just more $$$...

weird thing - i'll need my cutting board table with the alignment marks, but this GRS is weird - might have to heat and re-align the handle. it's old, pre "UB" by a good amount i'm guessing. VERY interesting. i'll have much fun beating it up :) everyone needs a good beater.

sweet - was watching those sharpening videos, and noticed the stropping with a green compound stick on the leather...

was looking for rouge stropping material anyway, so hit a woodworking store - score. found what looks like EXACTLY that material in the video, $6 a stick, and some neato diamond rods for other things. DMT also makes credit card sized sharpening pads - literally a metal card, covered with diamond dust, in medium, fine, or super-fine - just the thing to carry and touch things up with. wow.

so, a soon project is to glue some leather strip scrap onto a board, trim it up, load it with stroppping compound, and have a final tool for the sharpening process. sooon precious.

oh, they had 4000 grit water stones. wow. have to learn how to use those too.

ha! glad to see I'm not the only one to call it home despot.

Meet who.

Anybody else go to WallyWorld for cheap goods made by slave labor?

I used to have nicknames for streets too. The only one I can remember was "Veronica, Betty and once Jughead" for Archibald Street in Ontario ;)

See ya all on the Isle of View :p

The green polishing compound is VERY fine stuff. For sharpening I usually use tripoli. It cuts fast, and doesn't polish too much. The green is usually for after something like tripoli.

Woodcraft does carry these compounds.

Some of the guys here may know something better, but it works its not expensive, and its pretty common too. Run a little carving knife over it a couple of times then polish on a strop loaded with green or yellow compound. Wow. Better be careful with that blade.

I was born in Tripoli. 'Course, back then Wheelus AFB was still operational, and Libya was still run by a king. When our F-111s bombed Libya in '86, one of their targets was a "Libyan airfield". I guess it's true, you can't go home. As if I'd really want to. ;)
