Hey all. How would you fix a bent tip. One of my slippies clip blade is hitting the pull side liner and you can see the first half inch? of the blade is where it is bent. How can I fix it?

I would heat it first, like in boiling water (209*) . Then have a block of wood ready to stead it on before the hit . While still warm pull it out, lay it on the block, bend up and give it a tap with a smooth faced hammer . First light and if not enough improvement then harder . Two or three hits should have it back to normal . The heat is to avoid shock and make it more malleable . DM

Is 212F really enough heat to effect the metal when trying to bend it? Just curious because I would never have thought that was enough just by intuition.

I would put the blade on a rag on top of something hard, preferably a big chunk of metal like a vise. Then tap the blade with a hammer if you're not worried about making a mark. Maybe use a 1" square piece of hard wood to tap with the hammer if you want to make sure you don't make a mark.

Boiling water will have no effect on the steel.
Don't use a hammer. Just gently bend the blade.

Place some wooden scales leftover from handle material, or even thin plywood into the vice on either side of the point. Tighten carefully and then very carefully bend the tip.

Sorry for OT, but that would mean that putting a blade steel in a dishwasher would have no ill effects on the temper of the blade? Is this true?

As long as you don't have some nuclear-powered dishwasher, the heat-treatment should stay the same. The need a lot more heat to affect HT (in the area of the temperatures of the tempering process).

Ok, FlaMtn 212* . It helps to prevent such a shocking blow to the metal . I've used just a match as well . DM

Hey guys thanks for the ideas. It will have to wait a while because I don't have a vice here at school but when I go home for the summer I will be able to fix the knife. Thanks guys.
