Fixing a busted up Case Wharny

I recently found a Case XX Knives 16056 XX Vault Series knife that I really like. The problem is that when I got it, it was really in poor shape compared to other case knives I have. Its not an easy knife to come across so I kept it. The problem is the liners are very poorly ground and do not sit flush in either the open, half stop, or closed positions. The main bolster pin is a little long protruding (albeit slightly) on the non badge side, and the blade is so crooked that it almost slices into the brass liners with each close. The halfstop is terrible because the spring sticks up really badly.....kinda like a cheap Jap knife I own.

Now the positives....It is an extremely nice looking knife IMHO. The spring has a damn near perfect feeling for my likings. Its budda. Believe it or not, the brass liners look excellent with this knife. The antique smooth bone is stained in a way that gives it personality like no other. Portions of the bone look like they were stained with blood.

But because of its obvious inperfections it, became my pocket rider. It's blade and bolsters dulled up pretty bad from being in my pocket, but last week I hit it up on the old polishing wheel. It came out looking better than when I got it in the mail. Frickin stunning. So now I want to see if there is anybody out there that can fix the problems with the knife. I don't know much about Case but they probably wouldn't want to iron out these imperfections, so I am looking for a knife builder/repairer who works with Case knives. The main pin may need to be knocked out to fix the protruding pin and half stop problem. Definetly some grinding will be needed on these liners to get them to sit flush.

Any suggestions?

From your description I'd say that someone's taken that knife apart. It never left Case like that.

I will second eisman. It's worth a shot to send it to Case. They can be generous in maing things right. If they can't help you then possibly someone can but your description of the problems sound tough to fix. One fix to one problem can make the other problems worse. Try Case first.

Sounds like its been apart to me too. This voids the factory lifetime warranty. I would give case a try if they can't help then Don Seals is a member and is listed in the service directory. He has done work for me before. Here is my grandfathers 52087 jack

I, too, purchased that model and mine also had issues, sent it to case and its fine now. turn around time was about 8 days total.

As a registered user, you would upload the pictures to a web hosting service such as photobucket. Once there, if the the service provides you with IMG codes, then copy it and past it in your post.

IF you use a service which does not provide that code, just copy the web address of the picture and paste it into your post, wrapped thus:

Y'all gots a visitor message.

I didnt have an issue with the pins, mine had blade play, side-to-side and the blade did not close all the way, case ground the kick and took care of the play,,I do still have a very small gap in one of the liners but very minor.

I appreciate everyones advice. I know nothing about Case customer service because I have only had beautiful Case knives in the past. I contacted them after hearing everyones advice. They were extremely helpful and told me to send it in...so I did. Great American company.

I just got a postcard from Case...;)...they got it and will begin work on it. I will keep everyone updated and post pics when I get her back.

I am going to do a quick follow up post. I have never dealt with Case before and had it not been for the guys on this forum suggesting to do so, I wouldnt have. Well, I got it back today in the mail. I have a major problem!!!! Its so pretty now, I don't want to put it in my pocket!!.

The blade was centered and it no longer hits the liners when it closes. The knife is perfectly smooth like all my other Case knives now. Who knows how they did it. I have been wondering if I set the bar to high when I sent the knife in. I mean its not a custom knife. I listed out my issues and even told them I really liked the stain on bone handles and would prefer then didnt ruin that. Well I got it back and its a miracle. It almost perfect. The pin is now perfectly flush. The bone, bolsters, and liners are all perfectly flush in the closed position and are very smooth to the touch. The only thing is now when opened, the blade and spring do not sit flush. The spring does not sit flush with the liners either for that matter. If I was paying Tony Bose money for the knife I would be somewhat disppointed with this one issue. But overall, I am NOT sending it back and exposing myself to the loss of the knife in the mail. I really like the knife and am very happy with the miracles Case worked on this knife. Amazing. Thank You CASE knife!!
