Fixing a knife with a ding

Hello all,

So, I just dinged up my Spyderco Stretch knife. There is a pretty substantial ding in the knife blade.

I own a spyderco sharpmaker, but yet to have the diamond rods for reprofiling.

In a situation like this, would it be best to use the diamond rods and re profile the blade to make it so there is no ding or is there a better process that I can use to fix this?

Thanks for the help, any advice would be appreciated!

If you must rely on the Sharpmaker alone, then the diamond rods should work to fix that. Otherwise, just re-setting the edge bevels on a coarse & aggressive bench stone would be the best bet (SiC or diamond works well). A common technique among some experts here, is to actually 'cut' into the bench stone as if cutting it in half, in order to quickly remove the damaged steel along the edge; then lay the blade to your preferred angle and reset the bevels. Obviously, this is a freehand technique, so it takes some practice and patience. You could also use a guided clamp like the DMT Aligner clamp, in tandem with a bench stone. That'd make it easier to reset your bevels to very crisp geometry, before going back to your Sharpmaker to refine your edge.
