Fixing a rolled tip.

Hey everybody,
the tip to my 25" Sirupati rolled over, it's about 2 millimeters shorter than it originally was. I tried using the chakma on her, but the tip just laughed violently at my attempts. I don't think that it's chipped, or broken, just dented. How would you recommend I get this baby straightened back out.

Thanks for your time, and your knowledge.

Bob

Hi Bob. On all my chips and dents I use a cardboard wheel with juler's rougue on a bench grinder. It removes very little metal and it straightens out and polishes the tip/edge back to original condition. a setup like this will cost you about $70, but it is worth it. if you can't do that, then i would bend the tip back with needle nose pliers and then use a coarse grit stone followed by a fine grit. But you probably already knew that! Good Luck

A mill bastard file should straighten that tip right out at minimal expense.

It will take off a bit of metal. Takes a long time to file away a khukuri though.

Another option is a longer steel. On some of my other knives and hawks I've had to use a foot-long, REALLY hard steel to knock them back in shape. The extra length to push with did seem to help some. Try pushing the dent towards the edge with HEAVY pressure all the way through the stroke. If it's bad enough the chakma didn't work, though, I suspect you are going to have to remove some steel. Still, it might be worth trying before you break out the abrasives, if you have a longer steel to hand. YMMV.

Lock the knife in a vise and use a piece of steel to push the tip back out. A piece of relatively soft steel like angle iron minimize scratching. Expect to use a lot of pressure and repeat often.

If you use the bastard file push in the direction that does not file.
