Fixing an anvil

I have and old anvil that we used in the foundry for many years and it is VERY sway backed so I would like to fix it for my son to use. I plan to weld it up with hard surface rod and grind it straight and smooth. What grade of hard surface rod have you had good luck with -- I see there must be 30 different grades to choose from. I have both DC and AC welders so I am all set on that end.
