Fixing broken tip on SAK

I was at my friend's house and I spotted a SAK on his desk. He told me he hadn't used it in a while because it had gotten so hard to open (he's not the knife nut that would ever oil a knife). When I checked the knife out it was extremely hard to open, and when I finally opened it this is what I found (picture is actually after I cleaned it up):

I offered to take it home and clean it up for him. I cleaned it as best as I could and you can at least open and close it now, but it's still stiff. Well I had some free time yesterday so decided to attempt to fix the tip with a dremel (first time doing this). This was the final result:

The downside is the knife no longer has a sharp tip. This got me thinking that maybe I could put a reverse tanto tip on it (is it a sacrilege to do this on a traditional?), or maybe a clip point. What do you guys think?

I think your general idea is good. I would make the curve a little more gradual though and not so rounded.

From the picture, it looks like the tip might have been broken off by prying. I think you've done a great job to make it usable and it would be silly to make it into a clip-point so the tip might fail again.
On the other hand, I do agree to check with Victorinox and maybe they will replace it with a new blade? :)

I didn't ask my friend how he broke the tip, but I'm sure he was prying with it. I'm just gonna tell him to pry with something else.

I think both a tanto or a clip point would be ridiculous, but at the same time funny. :D

I'll update with pictures when I decide what to do.

Get him a SAK that comes with a prybar. Not sure if there is one though. I know my Victorinox Multi-Tool has one:thumbup:.

I would have removed steel from the edge, to keep the original profile. But still, good job

Can you explain a little more please? I sharpened it on the Lansky at 17dps finishing with the ultra fine ceramic and leather strop.

Ohh ok! You're right, that would've kept more of an original look. I guess I wanted to turn it into a sheepsfoot or reverse tanto since I like those blade shapes the best.

If you bring up the tip, make sure it's still below the handle edge when blade is closed. An exposed tip is not what you want ;)
