I have a congress slipjoint knife that I use for carving. The blades seem to be getting loose. That is, they move left to right. Is there a way to tighten them up?

with a small hammer you can gently tap the pin that the blades are on. just do a tap or two at a time and test the tightness. you can always tighten more, but its harder to loosen it back up.

thanks Siguy

I do not see a pin, just the Nickel Silver Bolsters.
Is the pin under the bolster?
Should I tap on the bolster?

the pin is likely also nickel silver, and when they polish the bolster the pin and the bolster blend in and you can't see it. if you let the bolsters tarnish you will likely be able to see the pin.

if you tap on the bolsters it should work. aim for the middle of the bolster, that is usuall where the pin is situated.

You can also wrap the bolster with a cloth before tightening- it prevents scarring the bolster.

I have been able to tighten up some old slipjoint blades by holding the knife against a relatively soft piece of wood, like a piece of fir 2x4, and striking the bolsters with a hard rubber mallet. You can also wrap a piece of shop rag (for example) around the knife prior to impact if you choose to.

As noted above, start with light impact and then check blade tension. Repeat as necessary. :)
