Fixing My Axe Head

Found this axe head out exposed to weathering, with rust all over it and such. I was brushing the rust off and noticed a decent sized crack on the eye (link to picture below). I think that I can plug it up with a weld and it'll be fine, but what I don't know is how the welding will effect the HT. I expect that I can weld it and not have to re-HT, but I am by no means an expert in this area. Please let me know what yall think.

When I went to school for tool&die and for welding, I learned that you can do work on hardened steel items without ruining their heat-treat by doing the welding, grinding etc. in short bursts and cooling in water in between. If you take a stick welder and just lay a bead the entire length of the crack on one session without stopping and quenching the part, then yes you stand a good chance of taking hardness away from the object.
