Fixing of hole in the sheath

Just received a wonderful 18 inch Kobra from Uncle today.

It is the lightest khukuri I have ever held. And it seems more distally tapered than the 18 inch Gelbu Special that I received simultaneously (or are my eyes deceiving me?).

I like it very much. It has made me fantasize more about a very slender one at about 20 inches... As slender as those khukuris I saw here a while ago made from old files.

Now, I intend to give it away to a friend of mine who is into martial arts. So I want it to be just about perfect. Therefore I think I would like to fix a hole in the sheath, which for me is rather unimportant, but since it is a gift to someone else it becomes important.

On the backside of the sheath there is a hole which is ovaloid in shape. It is 1,2 cm long and 3 mm at it's maximum width.

My friend is not going to bring this one out into the forest as I am going to forbid him to do any chopping with it. He is just going to keep it in his home and possibly bring it to his dojo some times. So this will just be an aestethic fix that doesn't need to hold up against days of rain and ice and such.

Does anyone have any advices for how to cover the hole?

I thought black tape, but that really sounds ugly.

Eik, if the hole is just in the leather this is how I'd fix it.
- Cut the hole slightly larger with an exacto knife, just larger enough to give it a nice, even shape around the edges
- Use some tracing paper to trace the outline of the hole
- Transfer the outline to a piece of leather (vegetable tanned) of the same thickness as the leather covering the scabbard, and cut it out, trim as necessary until it's an exact fit
- Use a good leather glue (Barge cement, or Feibing's) to glue the patch in place
- Dye the patch to match and give the whole scabbard a good buff with black boot polish (paste, not liquid)

There you go, good as new, and the repair will hold up to all but the very closest of inspections.;)

That is the second khukuri sheath I receive with a hole in it. In the other one it was in the belt hanger, and it was bigger and irregular in the edges.

I don't mind it but I am a bit surprised. After all, this is Himalayan Imports, the quality brand. Other people might mind more than me, just thought I should tell you.

Kismet

It is just in the leather.

Thanks for the good advices. Now that I look at the simplicity in it I must say thanks again for taking the time to write me something that I should have been able to figure out myself.

Thank you very much. :)

Glad to be of help Eik, I know your friend will appreciate your gift, and your effort to make it flawless.
