Fixing up Balis and Question about Finishing Blades

Hey, everyone. I was checking out some of the old posts the other day, and I ran across one talking about replacing pins. I've had some balis break on me before (the pins) and I just quit using them because I was too lazy to fix them. This is until I ran across Clay's extremely usful site: www.balisongxtreme.com, and found some of his tips. I've fixed up most of my broken balis now, and I strongly recommend that everyone do the same with theirs.

I remember reading somewhere that loose handles are often the cause of pin and handle breakages. I followed the instructions on Clay's excellent site (www.balisongxtreme.com) to tighten the handles, and fixed the problem. I recommend using the hammer method.

NOTE: Clay is not paying me to promote his site.

A question I have... I heard someone mention that they mirror polished one of their blades using sandpaper. Is this possible? Can you just use regular sandpaper to polish metal?

It is not possible to obtain a mirror polish with sandpaper, but it's a place to start. Ultimately, you're going to end up with polishing compound and either some sort of motorized polishing wheel, a Dremel tool is fine, or a soft rag and lots of elbow grease.

A good mirror polish, one that is perfectly smooth and reflective, is very difficult to do. The problem is that a mirror finish shows every defect no matter how small.

Forget the mirror. On all of my knives that get scratched up, I buy some extra fine sandpaper and steel wool, then put a satin finish on it. Looks real nice. But, I also have several buffing wheels and a dremel tool if I just can't leave that mirror finish alone.
