Ladies and Gentlemen,
It seems there are many here who plan a vacation here in Fla. and have theme park visits on their agenda. The problem is that since Sept. 11, 2001 security measures at Fla. attractions have changed a bit.
As a resident I have(or have had) season passes to many of these parks. The following are my recent experiences at some of these parks as far as knife carry is concerned.

Disneyworld(this includes Animal Kingdom, Disney/MGM, Magic Kingdom and EPCOT):
Expect to have your packages, backpacks, fannypacks and purses and baby stroller compartments looked into. You will be expected to open these and show the contents to the security officers at the gate. I have gone thru with folders clipped to my pockets and not been bothered. Usually, I un-clip them and let them sit at the bottom of my pocket. It seems that as long as you are not flashy, you don't get bothered. It also seems to me personal appearance may play a role. This is what I've observed while checking out the security.

Sea World:
You will be funneled thru a metal detector prior to admission. I would expect your bags to be looked into also. I threw my season pass here in the trash and will not return until they become American again.

Busch Gardens in Tampa:
Same as Sea World, all the way.

Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure:
I honestly cannot tell you as I haven't been since 9/11. My pass ran out before I could get there. There is a distinct possibility I will try to visit while I'm down for the Guild Show. If I do, I'll post the results here on the forum.

Cypress Gardens:
You will be looked at by security upon entering but I've not been bothered by them and have not had to open my fannypack for them.

Kennedy Space Center:
Again, I haven't been since 9/11 but I would expect to leave your knives in the car as this is essentially a military complex.

I sincerely hope this gives some of you a heads up and since I'm off work until Labor Day, I plan on poking my head into some places I've not been to in a while. I'll update as I visit them.

misque,

I got back from FLA on 6/22 and can add a little to your post.

Universal Studios: No bag searches or metal detectors.

Kennedy Space Center: Thorough bag search AND metal detectors. Almost had a problem bringing the Surefire E2 in.

Aloha

This past weekend I took my wife and kids to Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston, TX. We had to experience very long lines in order to go through metal detectors. I had to take my EDCs(light carry-Spyderco Calypso Jr. PE, Spydercard 50/50, Jester SE, and a Kershaw Chive as money clip) back to the car or surrender them to the teenage idiots that were the "screeners". You should have seen their faces when I pulled out my blades.:D Lol!!

I would have taken the family somewhere else, but the tickets were prepaid and my kids' expectations were high. They had never been there before.

I will never take my family to another theme park until this country stops being ridiculous like this. Come on, what the hell are you going to do with a 3" or 4" blade?? Even at that, my Calypso Jr. has a blade slightly smaller than 3". About the only scenario would be if your knife fell out of your pocket, while you are riding a coaster, and hits somebody in the head!!

My money will be much better spent next time.

Like I've said before, maybe I'll just go fishing.

" Come on, what the hell are you going to do with a 3" or 4" blade??"

Hmm...What can you do with a 1" blade? Um,change a country forever?

gester, you have a good point there. Unfortunately a one inch blade or so did change our country forever...but we're talking about theme parks here.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm heading to you guys in August and now I feel at least a little more prepared. BTW, what's the legal carry limit in Orlando? Or if you prefer to email me, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Matt:)

BigHonu,
Thank you very much! It's great news that Universal has not jumped onto the paranoia bandwagon.
I kinda suspected that would be the case with KSC. Thanks for the heads up! Now I won't be unpleasantly surprised when I hit it.

Jazzman,
I understand Fla. sees folder blades 4" and under as common pocket knives. I always make sure to keep my shirt tucked in so the knive's clips are not hidden. This prevents any concealment issues. I honestly cannot tell you what the city of Orlando's policy on blade length is.

Oh!! Also, Silver Springs does not bother it's visitors with bag searches and metal detectors.:D

Anyone know about Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO/ I am going to St. Joe, MO next week and my friend wants to go there. If they treat me like a law abiding citizen with my legal cutlery I would like to go (have some cool looking coasters). If they treat me as a second class citizen I would rather spend my money at an esablishment that appreciates my buisness.

Sorry I cannot post a link, but the Kennedy space center has a "security notice" on their home page will lists everything that they prohibit, which is basically everything - knives, OC, etc. Still going, but not happy. I can live with the rule (sort of) in a setting like KSC.

Bill

The 4" blade length is only if you do not have a carry (CCW) permit from Florida or a state in reciprocity with Florida.

The big clue is to not scare the horses! :) (or sheeple)
