It's called a "battle flag" and there's some US military lore about how it shows that our troops always go straight into battle, as the posters above noted. Why they couldn't just put it on the other side so it presented like a normal flag, I don't know. Also, I'm pretty sure flags still trail in the wind if you turn around and run away from battle, which would be faster than throwing a vehicle in reverse. But that's the story, and you see backwards flags painted on the right sides of a lot of military vehicles for that reason.
