On October 20, 2006 a film will be released that will tell us a story of bravery and national pride. Based on the book by James Bradley it details the life and times of the men who are immortalized in the famous photo of the flag raising on Mount Suribachi taken by Joe Rosenthal.

The book was phenomenal. I hope the film is just a good.

Sounds like a definite watch.
This is the sort of film that should be showed and tested upon in our public schools , IMO.

Thanks for the heads up Ken!!!!
If he's still kickin I guarentee you me and my Pop will be watching this one!
Reb, I agree with you 110%!!!!

The movie should be a HUGE hit. Clint Eastwood is, by far, one of the best directors today.

The book was excellent, the author is the son of one of the "flag raiser" so it is both a very personal account of a son learning about his father and a well done historical document.

I understand that Eastwood wanted to cast actors of the appropriate age to portray the Marines, but the boys who went to Iwo Jima were barely out of their teens in most cases.

Eastwoods next film is going to be a telling of the same battle from the Japanese perspective.

That film is entitled "Red Sun, Black Sand". It is due out before the end of this year.

I read this book a couple of years ago. It's a wonderful account of the bravery and brotherhood of the many men who fought and died for that little piece of rock in the Pacific. The book was so moving that certain passages just left me in tears. I will definitely see the movie.

They recently had a great show on Discovery HD that told the whole story of the fight for Iwa Jima as seen through the eyes of several survivors. One lost his leg and another was injured sent to recuperate on a hospital ship off shore and then went back and got shot up again before they finally left. The fight for Mt. Suribachi was only the beginning of the fight for Iwa Jima. It should be mandatory watching as part of all high school history classes. I believe the name of it was "The boys of H company" or something like that.
